We are about 30 bales (4.5 x 5) shy of having enough hay for this winter. We have put up 75 so far. We have an 8 acre pasture set aside to bale in the next month (still needs a little more growth). Anyway, a friend of ours just down the road 2 miles runs Charolais cattle, and we buy a lot of small squares from him (he just sold me 50 bales of Alfalfa/crab grass mix for $3.50 a bale!). Well, he called me today because he just baled his front 20 acres of fescue mix and got 40 bales. He wanted to know if I wanted it for $25 a bale. Our cell phone reception stunk, so all I got was that information, and that there was no weeds and some crab grass in it. I told him I would get back to him. After thinking for about 30 minutes, I decided I could get 20, just in case we did not get enough off the back pasture. I called my sister-in-law to ask if she wanted the other 20 (she needs a lot more than I do) and she agreed, knowing this guy puts up good hay and is honest. Well, we get the first load tonight and it is 5 x 6 bales that weigh between 1500 and 1700 pounds, and looks fantastic! It is net edge wrapped, and just gorgeous, tight bales, and great smelling hay!!! I quickly regretted offering half of them to my SIL, but a deal is a deal. I can not believe he sold so much hay for so cheap!!! I so SCORED on that purchase!!! Thanks for good friends looking out for me! I just had to tell everyone, you all would understand my excitement! :banana:

Was it still sitting in the field? I've offered people good deals like that just to save from having to move it twice. More times than not they don't take me up on it and will buy a bale here and there - normally emergencies on Sunday - and pay twice the price. Some people just can't grasp that I'd rather have my butt beat than move hay.

Yep, in the field. But he loaded it, offered to deliver it (just a few miles down the road), and he has put up enough hay for himself already. I'm going to get it tested, I do all our hay. That way I know which group to feed it to...

Way to go firesweep! As long as both sides are happy, as it sounds they are, it was definatly a win. There is no better feeling when you secure your hay needs for the upcomming winter.

You said it right there Jenna! The farmers almanac is saying it is going to be a COLD winter, so I want to be over prepared!
