What type of grass is this?

Looks sort of like barley to me. Kind of like what they call foxtail on the west coast.

If it is about 4 to 6" tall it is little barley, a weed. Burrs get in your socks and other clothing for a rough wear. Cattle and sheep graze it early but once it heads they avoid it. It can be smothered out to reduce it using a winter cover crop that has more height or by grazing.

LOL, that field is too rocky to plow again for a cover crop.

LOL, that field is too rocky to plow again for a cover crop.

Broadcast vine type legumes and ryegrass or rye in the fall, winter or in the right seeding windows without any tillage for smothering. Throw in some brassicas or other seeds to try, too. Or no-till. Better results with either than tillage.

I have had the cows on that side of the place for two weeks and they have ate everything but that stuff.

Once it starts to head out they won;t touch it if the can possibly help it. Wild hog s will though
