I had a cow lose its calf about 3 weeks ago. The graft to replace the dead one was a failure. Most of the time I can make them work but not this time. So the cow and the graft calf went to the sale today after 3 weeks of fighting with them. The cow weighed 1,410 and sold for $1.89. I am certain that is the highest price cull cow I have ever sold. The calf was an emergency C section cut out of a cow who was down and about to die. He wasn't in the best of shape when we drug him out of the cow. We got him healthy but he never was very aggressive about eating. He sold for $1,100 on a day when the baby calf market seemed to be down some.
 
Last week the 5 wts were bringing over $5 lb here too.. Some 370 lbs brought $7.... Some good cull cows brought over $2/ lb. Unreal.

We are going to pull some of the biggest calves off the fall calving cows and sell next Friday. Cows will get preg tested on Monday, and there are some that were late late "spring calvers" , like not until late June/July.....so we held them back and put them with the fall calving group. Tired of these tail enders, so they have a chance to be at the "front" of the fall calving group. Ones that get too behind again will get sold as breds. Trying to tighten up the calving windows . These calves ought to weigh in the 4's +.... they are worth too much to keep and wean and feed. They will be bigger than the rest and not fit in the group when we do pull the rest off to dry up the cows for them to start calving in early Sept again.

I thought feeder calves were off a touch yesterday. The 7 weight calves were still pretty high but the 5 weights seemed off. I didn't write anything down so just fuzzy memory. The cow who sold for over $2 were younger cow going to feed.

I heard 4 inches out east of town. I'll be headed to check cattle this evening for sure. Up to golf ball sized hail. Pea sized in town.
Tornado hit south edge of Enid. Leveled a small neighborhood and some other businesses on the souther and east edges of town.

Thankful for no deaths. Everyone seemed pretty prepared. Cows have lots of trees and a big barn. I'm sure their grazing now

Tornadoes suck but the rain they usually bring, definitely helps.
For sure, could have been worse.

Saw a calf they carried through the ring bring $1,1000. It was high.
 
We had a cow with a 6 week old calf die last March so we bottle fed the calf. I'd guess we fed him in a pen for 10-12 weeks before he got out and back with the herd. After that we fed him once a day in the pasture for a little while. We weaned him with the rest of the calves and last week he weighed a touch over 750. You can't tell a difference in him and the others. If the market sticks $1,250 for a baby calf may work out. We are selling on May 15th and I'd guess he'll bring over $2,700 or more.
 
I took a heifer calf that lost her mom to the sale yesterday. I got $600 for the calf. While I was waiting they sold some nice black pairs for $5125,
