Depends on the time of the year, how full the animal was when weighed the first time, how far it was hauled, how long between weighings. If you are taking fat, juicy calves right off their mothers to the sale, expect 6 to 10% shrinkage depending on the weather.

Diet will effect shrink more than any other factor. Green grass will provide the highest shrink amount. oat straw seems to be the least.

i use a 5% shrink as rule of thumb on sale barn cattle or penned cattle.

Last load I shipped to Kansas (22 hour ride) was 9%. They averaged 625 lbs.
