Jersey/char (who knows, he is a unique looking critter) mix
Purchased MONDAY
ran him into the trailer. I saw him open mouth pant, cough ( a little wet) 5 or 6 times.
Before I even unloaded him, dosed him with 17 cc nuflor.
Once in a bedded stall, noticed his respirations were fast and shallow. No other indicators (no ocular or nasal discharge) Impossible to take temp without running him to chute, too far away for the stress. Gave him 3 cc of banamine. No change in respirations.
24 hours later (Tuesday), all still the same. CAll the vet. Doses him with EXCEDE and another dose of banamine. Tells me to give anothe dose of EXCEDE Sautrday night.
24 hours later (Wednesday) still the same. Shallow respirations. Coughing. No worse, no better.
Appetite = will eat grain mixture. Doesn't appear to be eating much hay, or chewing much cud. Poops are normal. He is drinking.
He will rise, his eyes aren't dull, he doesn't hold his head, droop, etc.
Just working too hard to breathe and not consuming enough.
Maybe my expectations are too high, but I am not loving that his respiratory situation is not improving at all and that he is not eating the forage very well.
WHat should I expect for improvement? I hate to do it, but when should I just run him back to the sale barn and cut my losses?
