My sons have both had accounts in the Texas Guaranteed College Tuition Fund since the oldest was five, (when the program was introduced) and the youngest was an infant. My older son has been using it now for two years. We paid his by the month and my younger son's in a lump sum once a year. It pays for college tuition and fees, but not books, room or board. But it is still a great way to get a head start. It was nice the first time he registered and used the card to pay for his tuition.
Other than that, I have always tried to back my child support checks for that purpose. And my younger son has calf money in his account.

Well, he just has a passbook account. The prepaid tuition thing is mainly where the money goes. It is very flexible, too. If he does not go to college he can withdraw the money. If he wanted to go to school out of state or to a private school he can use it, too. If something happened to him, God forbid, then it could go to someone else's account. I like it a lot. It is a good way to save for school. The passbook account is for things like when he needs a car. He's 13 now, so that will be coming up.
So you have some in a savings account for him? Reason I ask is they had a investment account opened for them, but it has been losing money with the stock market, and we are wanting to put it in a safe place, where it will gain, but not lose guaranteed. i was thinking a CD or savings bonds would be more practical for them.
