sage grass problem

I am in north Alabama and my fescue fields have been taken over by brown sage grass. anyone have any idea how to get rid of this grass and not damage my fescue? Thx David

Check your soil pH. You may need to lime.

Novatec is correct sage grass prefers acidic soil, raise the ph with agricultural lime and the sage grass will die out and will be replaced naturally.

Thank you for your response. I have limed but the soil test showed good PH levels. What about chicken littter? I am thinking it will only give it some good nitrogen and could make it worse? The combination of a drought and the sage is killing my fescue.

They are correct you will need lime. However cows will eat sage grass when it is green and before it heads. I have even seen it baled young and green and cows eat it. But once it heads or turns brown they will never touch it. Lime will kill it out and you will see a far better reaction from your nitrogen you put out in the spring once you get your pH in line.
