ruptured milk vein

I had to give a cow cal-mag into the milk vein as I was told. I am wondering if it is ruptured. There is a swelling a pretty good size now and it feels like it has fluid in it. She also acts like it is a little sore. Has anyone ever seen this? I will try to get pics.

You didn't rupture the vein but you did get some calcium outside of the vein. It will be a bit sore but will go away. I used to put calcium under the skin in the neck of the dairy cows so no harm done.

when we had to treat cows for milk fever .we would put the calodex in the bloodvain in the neck or under the skin.never put it in the milk vain.

The so called "milk vein" is much easier to "hit" especially for someone not yet skilled in giving IV's. I would recommend getting rid of that huge needle that comes with your IV set and replace it with a 16 gauge 1 inch needle..It will be much sharper and also lets the fluids go into the blood stream at a much slower rate cutting down on the potential for shock and death from administering the IV too quickly.

Ditto. Calcium is a caustic substance and can ruin a vein if it gets outside it... for future reference, you may not be able to use that vein again if you need to run an IV on her. (Oxytetracycline and sodium iodide are two other substances that will ruin veins as well, FWIW.)

Thanks that makes me feel a lot better. She isn't milking a lot right now after the milk fever but I am hoping it will come around. She is starting to eat better.
