For those of you who remember her, Espan aired an original movie about Ruffian tonight and, being an admirer, I watched it. I had already done some research on Ruffian - I remember the match race between her and Foolish Pleasure - and I found it interesting that both her sire and dam were euthanised for similar reasons. I'm wondering if her fate might have been different if her owner's had chosen to not push her by entering her in that match race, or if her fate would have simply been delayed. Any thoughts?

I remember the race and watched that program, too. What happened to her sure makes a case for not continuing some bloodlines if they are being bred for a demanding sport.

Sire, Reviewer, fractured cannon bones at 2,3, and 4 when he was finally retired. Dam, (don't remember her name), had "bad" knees early on (arthritis?) and was retired at 3 or 4.

Her sire - Reviewer - broke a hind leg while standing at stud, underwent surgery, woke up fighting and further injured the leg. He, too, was euthanised due to the injuries. Ironically, both of her parents were euthanised within 2 years after Ruffian was euthanized.
