Losing a calf never gets easier over time. We had a really good heifer that my nephew was showing this summer and last night we went to start loading feed for a fair that we are heading to today, and found his 6 month old calf dead.
This was his first year of showing, and had already won with her at our county fair. The adults are probably taking it harder than he is (he is autistic, so it wasn't like he didn't care, it is just hard for him to explain and get feelings out at times), but it hurts seeing that happen to a kid. They do get to learn the life cycle this way, but would prefer it to happen to an older cow, or a steer (which they know about butchering).
Not sure exactly what happened, but she probably got tangled up and broke her neck. I just wish it got easier...
 
Losing one that has had all the blood, sweat and tears that go with showing is the worst! You can't help getting a bit attached to them. It's a raw deal, hope he continues to want to show.
 
Sure sorry to hear that. With two kids of my own I hate it when anything unfortunate like this affects our youth. Kids are mighty tough though.
 
Yes it hurts. It is part of life's lessons. Kids get attached to animals. Caring for them gives them purpose. It can be like losing a family member for some at extremes. Losing a dog or anything else is tough on a kid. It aint so easy on us grown ups either when the emotional investment is there.

Thanks. The one nephew has bounced back and is helping 2 other kids show calves in the junior and open shows. We don't have anything small enough for him ourselves, and we are so blessed to be in a breed that will come together and help the kids out when something like this happens.

man thats a tough break for your nephew,sorry that he lost his calf.get him another heifer to show as soon as you can.
