Rodeo Cruelty

Hi gang,

Okay, I don't know about anyone else, but I'm gettin' pretty dog-gone tired of hearing about rodeo being cruel. About how barrel racing and bull riding are cruel to the animals, and how horrible the lives of those animals must be. There are many sides and perspectives to a story. Some say it's cruel and some say it's not. Whats your opinion?

I have rodeoed my ENTIRE life. My dad was the president of the company and my mom was the seceretary. Anyways, in my opinion, bulls are only buck once maybe twice a week and they eat and sleep the rest of the time. Nothing about it hurts bulls. Barrel horses are trained to run and love it. If they dont, then they aren't trained and ran. If it was cruel it would have been stoped YEARS ago. Nuff said outta me :)

Check out an organization called Friends of Rodeo www.friendsofrodeo.com

They do a lot of work to put out the facts about rodeo stock and contradict the half-truths and exaggerations from the animal rights extremists. In general, rodeo is not cruel although of course there are bad apples. One of the "talking points" from FOR is that a rodeo career gives a lot of animals a longer and better life than they could have had otherwise.

T&B don't let those people get under your skin. If you want to speak truthfully and positively about rodeo to people that don't know but are willing to listen, then do so.
But don't let yourself feel that you must argue with those critics or defend the sport of rodeo.
You know the truth. Maintain the superior posture to which you are entitled.

Maybe these people think that the Bulls are treated like the ones in Spanish Bull Fighting, which is cruel and barbaric, I have never seen a bull fight and would never want to, can't see the fun in sticking spears into a bull and watching it fight for it's life which it looses in the end can be any kind of sport. Then the carcus is disposed of, not even used for food in some sort, dog/cat food. and the hide as leather, just a waste. but I would like to see a Rodeo some day. No animal, meaningfully, maimed, excepting maybe a cowboy but that's his choice to ride. :cowboy:

I will say,over 40 years ago I was at the Misquete Rodeo(sp),long before it got to be such a big show,and they were useing rope as a bucking strap on both the horses and bulls,which had rubbed the animals flanks raw..
Rodeo has greatly improved from that..
As to the barrel horses,if one doesn't want to be a barrel horse there's not much you can do but sell him to a non-barrel racer and get another horse..

I'm glad to know that not everyone is against rodeo :) if some people would give it a chance, they would see it's not all bad. Sure, every now and again, there's a mishap and an animal does get hurt, but so what? Thats just life. Crap happens. But when you step in it, just wipe it off in some clean grass and move on :) Nuff said on that. :cboy:

I cannot pretend to know much about rodeo, but I grew up competing in games. Peg is right, if a horse has their heart in it, they love racing as much as the rider. My horse became a different animal once we stepped inside the ring, and I was really only along for the ride. He absolutely lived to compete, and it was the highlight of many summers. I would never have considered doing anything to him I thought might be cruel.

Now horse tripping is a different kettle of cucumbers..That should be outlawed.. I'm ok with steer ropeing,different legs.

never seen it,,,, but cattle are for sure ten times tougher than a horse,,,

Usually at Charro Days Rodeos.. Supposed to be a "tradition" like rooster fighting..
