Riverton Calf Sale

I just gave my calves their weaning shot yesterday, and weaned by the end of the month. I plan on holding on to my calves until January, by then they will be weaned 60 days.

Those ''top prices'' look good. Curious if they post averages so a person could have an idea on the market? We all like to market those top selling calves but that is not reality for most of us.

I thought we were going to top $6 yesterday. Came close at $5.975. Saw a number of 600 pound steers bring over $4. A lot more smaller calves than normal. With these prices people are bringing them to town. Not weaning and feeding like normal. Just load them up to take advantage of the high prices. Between the two sales they pushed 7,000 head . Talked to a guy who was at Vale on Wednesday. They started selling at 10:30 AM he left at 1:00 AM that night and said they were still selling. And that is mostly groups, not lot of singles.

With these prices, a sick or dead is expensive. Get them straight to town and get a check and save your hay.
Weaned calves are still selling better but more so is the vaccinations. Because sick or dead hurt just as bad to those up the line. Unweaned, unvaccinated calves are a good 40 to 50 cents off. Fresh off the cow with 2 rounds of vaccinations are just a touch below weaned calves.

Agreed. We had branding, preconditioning in August and a September booster in ours. I think it helped get another bid or two.
