We went to check on Larry and girlfriend our only calves. We had just moved them down the road to my brother's field. His neighbors dogs attack them and killed both of them. :cry2: Its the first calves-cows we ever owned. The guy said he wants to make it right, he is going to pay for them. He said he wish we shot his dog. Man it sucks they were like our pets... Guess Larry and girlfriend going to cow heaven. :cry2: I am not even Chevy anymore nothing left to farm. Just call me Hood barbie I guess. :( I know stuff happens and its not the mans fault his dogs got over there, even doe they should have big tied up. I can't say much cause we don't keep our foster dog tied up 24-7. I tried to be understanding...stuff happens.... just sucks. Does anybody know if I can right them off on my imaginary farm taxes?! Not the cows, but all the feed, grain, ect?! Man! :frowns:

Does it always suck this bad getting started in farming!? Pretty much it just cost out the butt and we lost all the cows....I want to cry.

Yup, just starting out can really suck. However, that said, learn from this and it will get easier, then something will come up and knock you back down. Then you get up, put your big kid pants back on, dust yourself off, and start again. It is the way of things, life, and cows.

Sorry about your loss. It will get better.

Still should shoot the dog(s). They will do it again. They have the taste for warm blood. If you have chickens watch out.

If you stay in thise business, it'll happen again some day. That's just part of it. I lose some calves every year. We do all we can to save as many as we can.

I lost one to a dog before myself. Lost them to all kinds of other things too. The more you own, the greater the odds are that you lose one.

The tragedy here is that you lost everything.

sorry about your calves....... apparently you dont have to have livestock to be a farmer.. man here got 20 acres and a dually, that has so-n-so farms on the door and not a sign of a cow on it,, he$% it aint even fenced

Maybe he's growing marijuana in the basement

Hang in there. Los tmy first six many years ago right behind the house to neighbors dogs. It totally sucked and he never paid a cent. I did get to shoot all the dogs though. Left em layin in the field as a statement!

After being out of the business for a while, when we decided to get back in, 15 years ago, we bought 2 lovely weaned Simmenthal heifers. Had them in a pasture right behind the house. One day when I was gone a couple of strays got in and hamstrung both of them. I got home just in time to ruhem off before they killed them. Having to shoot hose 2 little girls almost kept us from getting back in the business. I say the dogs a couple of weeks later haning over a back fence a couple of miles away from us.

chin up thats a sad way to loose calves.ive seen what dogs can do to 15 or 20 bottle babies,an its not a pretty sight.itll make you sick to your stomach.those dogs made a bad misstake though.they returned an paid with their lives.

:( I'm sorry. it's tough to lose them that way. I hope that the guy makes good on paying you for your loss. Add the amount of money that you spent on them to their value.

do you still have your little goat?

Sorry Shell, I agree with RRC, shoot the dogs anyway. :cowboy:

x2

Me 3 . Next time it may not be calves they go after but 2 legged young'ns .

The renters down the road have a doberman pit bull cross. I told him point blank, that dog comes near my cattle or even my pets it is a dead dog . Keep him chained up or make d@m sure he stays put ,and I am not the only one round here with an itchy trigger finger when it comes to wandering dogs with "killer" in their background. They don't get second chances if they venture onto someones property. A heck of alot different than someones stock dog or LGD wandering that are used to be around livestock their whole lives .

 I shot the neighbors pit cross day before yesterday. Now my new neighbor has a pit down the road and I shot at it yesterday with a pistol and emptied the clip. Didn't hit him but I'll get him before the weeks over.

I hope you at least had a good reason Iso and weren't just target practicing. ;-) I am not advocating shooting other peoples pets , but if they are on your property and up to no good ,then sometimes that is the only option.

A little poodle barking at my cattle doesn't really cause me too much worry but if I see a dog in with them that more than likely is eyeing them up for their next meal ,that is different. I am hoping Spartan will deter any strays from now on, last night was pretty quite around here, hardly heard any coyotes at all. ;-)

Totally off topic but why is it that the scrawniest twinks have to have pitbulls as pets. What the heck is wrong with a nice golden retriever or cocker spaniel.

If a Pit is running amongst my cattle he is up to no good. Period. Otherwise I'll leave well enough alone.
