Replacement Heifers

I have a small herd of about 10 black cows, 5 baldys, and a black bull. I am looking to add a few more heifers to the herd and am considering herefords or charolais but am open to anything. What are everyone's opinions on what I should get next?

Get me all your money. Buy more land. Buy more cows. Nevermind you couldn't do that you would be broke from giving me all your money. Bahahahaha.

Depends on what you are wanting to do and what you like. What sells good in your area would be one thing to consider.

Only keep heifers born in the first 30 days of the calving season. Don't be concerned with color.
You can control that with the bull unless you expect one generation miricles.

Hereford x Angus will have the highest heteratosis, and if your bull is homozygous for black, you get black baldy calves. Where are you located? If in the southern half of the US, Braford cows would be awesome. Black baldy calves with a touch of ear, and a lot of high bread vinegar! :)

Thanks for the information. I am in Concord, NC. Baldys tend to bring good money at the sale. I'm not sure where I would get Braford cows around here.

How many heifers are you looking to add this year? If 10 or less, could probably put together a uniform group pretty easy in NC.

Herefords would cross great, and can generally be bought a good bit cheaper than blacks or char x.

Add cows or heifers that will give you the best saleable calf.... We get a small hit here on char/ang crosses.... good black baldys do good but if they look too much like the "new black hereford" forget it.... they don't like the bwf that they call feathernecks.... with all the white like a normal hereford. RWF and herefords get hit pretty bad, $.20-.40 / lb.
I will buy all the rwf and hereford heifers at a great discount and then they will most all produce a good saleable bwf calf.

Red necked Hereford or BWF whichever you can get at the best price.

I bet I can scare up 5 Braford heifers. Let me see what I can do this week, I saw some Brahman x Herefords in SC this morning in an ad. These aren't Brafords, per se. but the F1 initial cross to get one. I bet we can find reg Brafords, though, close by.

Actually, unless you know your black bull is BB, homozygous for black, then a BB homozygous Black Hereford cow would be the BEST choice over a Hereford. You would always get a black baldy calf, even if bred to a bb homozygous red bull.

@CattleFarmer17 , it is harder in NC right now than I thought it would be. Found a few Reg Braford bulls, but no cows or heifers. Those sixteeen 14 mos old open F1 heifers sold Saturday. Man, everyone wants those Braham X Hereford F1 cows so badly, that no one is breeding up Reg Brafords much. At least in the south. Might have to look west to find reg Braford cows or heifers. Louisiana or Texas maybe... @Caustic Burno ? @Brute 23 ? I mean, those F1's are THE best momma cows on the market, it is just that their calves by your Black Angus bull, would have a little more leather and ear than calves from a Braford cow by your bull. Might hurt you some when you sold the steers, I dunno. The heifer calves., if you kept some for replacements... would throw calves with just a hint of ear, if you bred them back to Angus bulls.

I had pictures at one time of two full sisters . The one that had the most Hereford characteristics sold red versus Tiger stripes the leather really shrunk up.
So I started looking for that type of F-1 they also haired over better in the winter.
It’s no difference in looking over a herd of registered Brangus some really favor the Brahman others the Angus.
There is no real science behind that just over 5 decades playing with Brimmer cross cattle.
Following guidance of Dr David Riley has probably had the greatest impact on my management, that’s where the science is.

I kept some heifers like this back this year. Their mommas are F1s bred to a Black Angus bull so they are 1/4 Brahman. I just couldn't bring myself to ship them.





When you take these 1/4 Brahmans and breed them back to an Angus again, you get calves like this. They are about as good as I can do in our market. They really clean up IMO.

Here is an F1's calf, so 1/4 blood bull calf.. I see no price difference between the F1's calves and the 1/4 bloods, here. I was very pleased with both. It may be different in other areas.


This would be a true F1 bull calf. You can see the leather progress as you get to 1/2 Brahman. You will not top the market with these but they sell surprisingly good still. These all have the same Angus daddy.

There ya go, @CattleFarmer17 ! That top pic, the f1 Braford.. 1/2 Brahma and half Hereford in that top picture. You just can't hardly ask for a better broodcow...anywhere...any breed. You use your Angus bull, and you will get a calf like hers. Or like the black baldy heifer in the first pic in @Brute 23 's post right above the one I replied to here.

That top heifer...DAMN!!!! I could move a truck load of them every day, and twice on Sunday. I don't blame you for keeping this one! Sorry to to tell ya, but there is no way you can improve on your breeding program,. Brute. You can;t improve on perfection
