Here's some of our replacement heifers. The red's and black's we will keep and the tan's are booked into a Bull Sale in the spring.

very nice - as usual. your land always looks so barren this time of year and i'm from michigan!!

How many cows do you cull in the average year? Are you in a pattern where you are culling about the same number or does it fluctuate quite a bit? Other than being bred back, what are the principle criteria you use?

From spring to fall, probably 10%-15%, it definitely fluctuates a bit.

Besides being dry, the other criteria we use are Production, Temperament, Health (lumps, lameness etc.) and conformation (udders, feet) and age.

1. Does "production" mean wean weight?
2. Do you have an age "cutoff" like some folks use or by "age" do you just mean things age related like keeping up?

Those are Randi's fields. She's a real trooper up in Canada. I'm in Kalamazoo. Plenty of trees. Plenty of snow too but Randi's place looks more like TUNDRA!!

Production does mostly mean weight, but also takes into consideration calving date and age of the cow.

We do not have an age "cutoff", I mean things like calf BW, Calf WW and other age related issues such as body condition.

Now, we are nowhere near Tundra country! I am actually only about 30 miles North of the Can/USA border! I'm pretty sure the pastures in Northern Montana and North Dakota etc. look the same! :lol2: :cboy:

Well for what it takes to drive from mexico to Portland, you'd have to double it for it to be 'up north' for us. I've been there, and then some.
