This might be a bit of a weird question but we tried the cattle thing and it didn't work for us for various reasons. We have a bull, a cow and a bull calf left.(the rest all gone in different directions) A neighbour is going to 'rent' our leftovers by 'paying' us with a yearling every spring. Is this a good 'rate'? He has 32 cows so should get at least 30 calves a year. The bull is 2 so will be breeding this spring and the calf was this summers calf so is not ready for 2 years. Obviously he won't be getting anything this year but we will still get a steer and the animals still belong to us. Can I get some feedback on this topic from some of you who are more in the know than we are? Thanks

It is a good deal, even if you get the saddest skinniest yearling from his place. Does he forever ow you a bull and a cow, or does the deal end when they end?

IMO,
Sell all of your remaining stock and put the money in the bank!
Where I come from you can’t be half pregnant.
Either you are in the cattle business or your not.

We were going to sell them to him but he wanted to 'use' the bull and said we would retain ownership. I imagine it would be until the bull can no longer be of use to him (5 years is the regular usage years in this area) then we would send him to market. We are no longer in the cattle business since they will no longer be on our property. I guess you could say it's kinda like having an investment certificate, when we need the money, we sell the bull. Until then, we get free meat. And so, it will probably be for the next lets say 7 or 8 years.

Well, never thought of that but they are at his place and he is receiving all the benefit of having them there, so, I would think it would be his bill.

And what if he breaks his tool on the first cow he mounts? Then what?
Or what if he gets out on a highway and someone gets killed ? Then what?
Liability goes with ownership.

Note to self:
If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.
If you must, have a written signed lease with him, which covers all these items.
