Found a chunk of pasture that is larger than I need this year but I am debating on renting it to start a renting "relationship" with the landowner. Has anyone else ever done this? Way more pasture than I need this year but it will allow me to grow in herd size which is a big goal for me.

Any available pasture or fields that can be rented I rent... Once someone else comes in with a contract its gone and you will likely never be able to get it again. I have way more hay fields and pasture land than I need for my cattle but ever bit I can rent I do it. :2cents:

Kingfisher, I'm in west central Wisconsin. I was curious because I found one place that is 350 acres of mixed timber and field for $15 an acre. Price per acre is great I think but making it pencil out is a bit of a stretch yet as I can't stock it to it's potential.

Maybe take in some yearlings or some pairs or something. Probably won't really make you any money to speak of once you put the time in but it will keep the lease for you and give you a year or two to get funds together to stock it.

Think I'm going to pass on it this year. I like the idea of buying more cows to stock it but then I'm getting further in the hole just to justify renting the ground. I'll be just as far ahead this year buying a few more round bales and putting them in the pasture a little earlier than normal. I never talk to her about how long of a lease she was looking for or if it was just a one year deal. My luck I'd get the fences up to snuff and loose it next year to someone she friends with.

Thats why draw a contract up 3-5 yrs. I'm leasing everything I can in my area. A lot of the bigger guys around me are still holding leases from 80's. Land is a major factor in growth of an operation.
