Let me start by saying

I bought a registered hereford cow in 2006 at a herf sale. We've ai'd her since, but I've never cared about registering her calves. She currently has a calf by World Class and we're thinking about selling them as a pair. So I checked on what it would cost to register her calf:

Only $12 to register BUT:
Need semen certificate (I knew about that) = $40
Member of Herf Assoc = $15
Membership service fee = $100

Total to register one calf - $167!!! Wow!

Are all breeds this expensive?

The Hereford Assoc. sucks with it's $100 per year fee.

I registered some calves from some cows I bought safe in calf. The sires had EPDs the Dams had EPDs and I submitted all data except BW which I did not have. Didn't want to be dishonest and all the calves came back with NO EPDS. The Assoc. seems to be somewhat of a joke. I am not a big EPD guy so I can live with it but it seems pretty dumb to me.

I must be missing something, why would you registered a calf that hasn't even hit the ground, it is a waste of your money as well the fact as not every animal should be a registered animal. :?

How did you enter DOB Sex etc ..I really must have missed something on here.

I am sure you can get new certs with data epd's etc at a small fee once you enter all of the appropriate and required info, does it say at the bottom of your cert. "this is not a registration paper"

Back when I got a lifetime membership iut was a membership and it meant no annual fee. The 100 bucks is just another way to nullify the annual memberships. They should have raised their fees instead. It makes it tough on the new guys with just a handful of animals. I'd swear they got lessons from the government.

The calves were 10 months old when I registered them. I had bought the dams from a breeder. The cows were bred to his bulls when I bought them. The cows certificates listed EPDs. His bulls had EPDs per the Hereford.org website. I sent in all data on calves. That was on the Hereford Assoc. provided registration sheet. Birth date, weaning date, weaning weight, ect... The only thing I did not list was BW, since they calved in a 320 acre pasture 40 miles from here and I did not get a BW. When I got the registrations certificates back on the calves, everything was there except the EPDs were blank. Seemed dumb as hell to me.

The market price at the sale barn is a little higher than what you would have to pay to register the calf. Wait until inflation kicks in and many more disgruntled members quit. Could be in the $250 range then.

Care to elaborate?

If you want to register calves, they have a yearly $100 activation fee, it includes a subscription to Hereford world. They actually call this fair, as it's the same fee for everybody, whether you have 100 head or 1 head.

Have you tried calling the association???

You not collecting Birth Weight Information is NOT why you don't have EPDs. You have to register in for EPD data. I had the same problem when I got my first heifer. One phone call made the difference. Its been a few years so I'm not sure, but I believe it is something to do with the Total Performance Records (TPR) program that they came out with.

How about you put forth a little bit of effort before bashing the AHA on a topic you are mis/un informed about!!!

As for the fees, that's just part of it. I think it was Cattle.com that did a report on Breed Association fees a while back and the AHA was not the worst.

Not exactly what I called them when they announce it to the members. Think I'm still on their black list.

Sorry I did not understand but now I do. Can the they not do an adjusted bw. I guess you know what to do next time, weigh them even with a tape when you get a chance, tag and tattooing is easier to when they are young.. But your post does make me wonder about some of these larger herds that do not see the calves close up until that are brought into work, how do they register their bw's.. ;-)

I know quite a lot about the AHA, so I know of what I bash!

To be in TPR you HAVE to send in BW per the AHA. The "nice" lady I talked to said I could consider "estimating" it. I am sure that is what most breeders do. I really doubt everyone in TPR records a birthweight on every single calf. It is a farce.

Not much different from Angus Assn charges. It does seem like a lot for one calf. But you only pay the membership fees once a year, don't you? So additional calves would cost $52....if you needed the Certificate.

The associations don't base their services or their fees on the once in a while speculator who might want to register one calf here or there. That practice is counter productive to building good data for EPD's. The best data comes from complete contemporary groups.

Some associations don't make you become a member to register an animal, you just pay double the normal member fees for the registration. Which is usually still cheaper for the onesy or twosy registrations.

If I was buying the pair and the calf looked good for its age, I would want it registered. And pay more because it was.

As bad as Herefords are I heard Angus Assoc. is getting desperate. Something about sending in 1% of sales proceeds to the Association.

Frankie what's the scoop?
