Registered Red Angus question.

I am purchasing 5 cows (3-4 yr olds) that are registered red angus. My question is this: Since they have been bred by a registered RA bull; Does the Sire owner have to sign and date the forms for registration when the calves are born? Or, as long as I have the registered number of the Sire, is it ok if I put that information down myself? I know the Hereford Association requires the Sire owner to sign and date the registration form, but dont know what the proper way is for the Red Angus Assoc.

If the previous owner owned the bull at the time of breeding you don;t need anything else. Just make sure the previous owner does a transfer of the cows to you. You'll get a years free subscription to the RA journal plus the registrations will be updated reflecting you as thr owner. Yes, the previous owner did own the bull which bred the cows. They will be transferring the ownership to me soon as I pay for them in full.
I guess I will become a Red Angus Assoc, member now. Thanks for the contact info dun.

To register the calves you'll have to become a member. We had registered RA for years before we decided to join. The cows were in our name and any new ones we bought were in our name but we couldn;t register calves or update the data to keep the cows EPDs and other data up to date.

The ownership registration has to be transfered before the calf is born or the previous owner will need to register the calves for you. Not sure what time frame your looking at but it will save a little hassle if you get the papers before the calves are born.

When he does the transfer on the papers, just have him note the dates the cows were exposed to the bull on the reg. papers, then when the calf is born, you can register them in your name. He will be noted as the breeder still.

Apparently the RA Associaiton is more enlightened. They have the abiilty to back up nine months from the calving date and know who owned the bull at that time.

You need to fill out breeding info on all bred females. If open check open, if bred check bred, and then list the Reg. # of the sire used and what dates bred.

If the cow has a calf before the papers go through the seller will have to change the transfer to be a cow with calf at side, not a bred female. Yes the RAAA and the Simmital Association are onthe cutting edge as far as registries go.

Ownership will be transferred BEFORE the calves are born. I spoke with an association person this past morning, and she enlightened me on the whole process. I would definitely say that the RAAA is definitely on top of things, and require quite a bit from the owners of registered cow/calves. Not saying its a bad thing, just they way they do things.
