I've been running out of good name ideas for registration papers. I like names over numbers. I am going to start using handles from folks in CT if they don't mind. How cool would it be to have Caustic as a bull name or hillsdown on a heifer? I am going to have a nail with this. The gelbvieh association registery will never be the same.

I don't know how well this would work. Heifers become cows and I think Hillsdown might take offence if you called her a cow. Just saying.

You could also take a block of cheese out there and the first one to eat it would be sky.

And when a flock of ducks fly over and one of looks up that would be Alan.

My cows all have barn names after family members. My two aunts used to rouse each other about how their name sake did at a show. Rosey and Delores. Then there was Hot Sassy Sue, named after my sister. :D

Once I tagged each one of my friends as a cow on my facebook album.
I got surprisingly positive results actually, stirring the pot didn't work :(

if you want, I can send you a list of names I've used.. might give you some ideas

I have a lot of heifers and cows with the name Hillsdown as it is my herd name thus my ct handle, so I do not take it personal Jo .
Hillsdown Alexa, Hillsdown Anna, Hillsdown Kaylea, Hillsdown Little Miss Sunshine , Hillsdown Belle , Hillsdown Miss fine Lady, just to name a few. Which btw are all Dam of Merit cows ;-)

I would be honored if one of your gals got my herd name as a first name Hoss. How about "Hillsdown it is all up hill from here" . :tiphat:

When we dairy farmed and had to name over a hundred heifers every year to register them we used a baby names book . There were also quite a few family and friends names used as well .

Some of my family ( mainly my sister ) were not that happy with a calf who then became a cow named after them . :help:

I'm safe with a handle with a number. But I think your first steer should be deep south.
No, I'd suggest it's ibetyamissedme.. and it should be one that had a really slow, hard birth and didn't get colostrum for a day.

Hoss I have been naming my bulls after WW2 aircraft. The names aren't unlimited but they have kept me going for a couple of years. There are some good ones there like Spitfire, Hurricane, Hellcat. If that is any help.

You may not have liked his presentation but the content of it was "spot on".

In my cattle line the cow's name always follows her daughters creating "cow families". Rosebud 1st, rosebud 2nd, and so on. Sires maintain a common name usually with a twist to it based on an individual. Makes naming easier and creates a bit of heritage.

A few years ago I was involved with rodeo cattle, mostly on the owner side. I used to name them after songs that I liked and songs I thought would sound cool if they ever made the big time (you've got to dream, right?). For what we have now, I went with names from the pedigree to come up with something. Songs are good, authors, artists, movie titles, characters, there's a plethora of stuff out there that's pretty interesting for naming cattle.
