Reforms on SNAP?

Is it time for major reform on what a food stamp can buy? We have a record number of recipients now and if they are restricted on junk buying it's better for everyone. After all, we're also paying for the health care. Why not be able to say no soda, chips, candy bars and many other processed foods? Maybe the so called "food deserts" would be fewer if the demand for fruits and veggies in poor areas our country increased. Also, an hour of recess at school wouldn't be a bad idea...with no cell phones. They could cancel the class where they learn how to chant "O B A M A ".

Older brother lives in Oklahoma, he was asked to come in. They helped him fill out the papers. After the review he was awarded two food cards. One for buying groceries and one if he wanted to grab a bite to eat at a restaurant. He will be 81 this August. Oklahoma is a red state but they take care of the old folks.

That should make him feel like a real patriot.

Who is they that asked him to come in? Did he really need help? If so, I applaud Oklahoma. My father in law is living strictly on SS other than that, the overage he needs we pick up.

He received a letter from Oklahoma Human Resources to come in. They explained what he might be eligible for. That is all I know.

I use mine to buy bulk stuff - enough hamburger to last a month, flour,Splenda, canned milk, cooking oil.
$81.00 doesn't go far,but it helps.

I do the same thing, it keeps longer that way.

Very little junk in the house,

We do the same. Empty calories. Very little nutrition there.

Well....you must be doing something right, or they would make suggestions for appropriate changes.

I was talking with a guy this week, that I actually know pretty well. He works, and his wife is a stay at home. He lives in a $300,000 house. He makes fairly decent money. He told me they get WIC. I didn't ask any questions, but what little he eluded to sounded like it was based on a debt to income ratio. If that's the case he should move to a smaller house, and take care of his kids himself.

I know for certain we would have qualified for "assistance" if we had chose to do so. And I make good money, but when we had 6 kids at home we could have taken the handout. Here's the deal; WE chose to have 6 kids, WE chose to have a lot of land and a big house. It is NOT anybody else's responsibility to subsidize our chosen lifestyle. WE pay our way. The end.

On another note, yesterday we were at a small family gathering because of a death in the family. My BIL and SIL were there. They suck the tit all they can and know how to play the system. The BIL told my 14 yo son he needed to eat more cause he was skinny. My son fired right back and told him "we can't afford to eat like you, and we work, that's why we are skinny"
I thought my wife would faint from embarrassment, but she stood up and grabbed my hand, and she said "son lets walk over here for a minute". I didn't know what was coming, but she told my son he was right, but next time don't say it in front of the whole family. :lol2: I told him it needed said. Kids do say the darnedest things

There sure do need to be reforms! I know a couple who have 5 kids, they went on assistance at about kid #3. Why should they keep getting more and more benefits because they CHOSE to keep having kids when they are broke? They came right out and said it was no accident, they just want another boy. Also they aren't married so the benefits are based on a "single mom" situation when in fact Dad is present, he just doesn't like to work.

Then you get other people who are just in a temporary downturn, but they don't qualify for anything - or else it's so little they can't even buy enough beans and rice to last the month. They have to just struggle thru on their own, hit the food pantry. Or people who worked, paid taxes for years, then they are old or sick or both, but they don't get squat. It isn't right. The "safety net" becomes a hammock for some, yet other very deserving people don't get anything or too little.

I don't see why WIC and SNAP are separate. It's all about nutrition, why not just administrate one program instead of two?

I am not against someone on assistance having a soda, a sweet treat or a salty snack. BUT if too much of their benefits are spent on junk food, "luxury food" and not real food, then they should lose a portion of the benefits. Obviously, they don't need them. Such as, 10% -- if they spent more than 10% on crap, then deduct 10% from their bennies. They would learn to shop smarter in a hurry.
