Red Sim/ Rat tail?

Hi guys,

Quick gene question. Internet is full of answers but is also very good at loosing me in even more questions. So let's just ask you.

We bought a red and white bred simmental cow (pur ? Don't know) Bred to who? Angus or Speckle. Today she calved a healty heifer but... She's gray ? Mother carries dilutor gene?

We have black angus and black sim sires... Should I be worried for eventual rat tail ?

Yes, you are correct. If she was bred to a black bull and had a grey calf, then she carries the dilution gene. Rat tails will be a possibility from her and black bull matings

I agree with RockinRB, Rat tail would be a possibility from her. No guarantees, but the gene comes from the Simmental side.

I don't care what anyone says or what the markets thing, I love the chocolates. If I could, I'd have a field full of them.

As far as i recall, i have about 1 in 5 or 1 in 6 rat tails on chocolate Sims. Have had a couple with a smaller switch. Seems to be more prevalent with char/angus cross for me.

The heifer calf is interesting. If she becomes a cow, her baby would be a surprise every year. The heifer calf should be a red carrier and dilute carrier. And with how the face looks, I think she has some kind of white-face gene going on. Lots of possibilities when she is old enough to breed. Rat tail would not worry me.
