Who has tried it and what do you think.What kind of PH does it like and do you re-seed every year.That seed is high as camel #%^$.
 
I have a small field of the red river crabgrass that i have had about four years.I like it and the cattle really seem to like it.As it is only a small field that i graze i cannot give you any yields on hay etc.I use this as a place to calve heifer's,wean a few calves etc.I plow this field each fall and plant it to rye or wheat then in the spring i disc it to get the crabgrass going faster.it will come out anyway but seems faster if you disc it.i have not had to reseed since i planted it but i do let it go to seed each year.In fact it is hard to not let it go to seed unless you graze it to the dirt,and the seeds can sprout several years after being in the soil.I would have more of it but nearly all of my place is black gumbo and the crabgrass likes sandy loam.I would recommend a small field for a year or two to see if it will work for you.I got my seed from RL Dalrymple of Elstel farms-www.redrivercrabgrass.com.He developed this while working for the Noble Foundation of Ardmore Ok.He is a nice guy and will give you any kind of information you need. good luck
 
Thanks Beefmaster very informative answer.Once your rye is done and you disc it how long before you can graze it.
 
Put in a test plot this spring, I was pretty disappointed at first, but in the last month it has taken off. Might have been to wet this year for it to get started. We normally get 60 inches a year we are at 58 inches as of today.

JJ216, I hate to give you one of those it depends answers but it does.Where i am located the rye generally peters out about april 1-15.We frequently experience late frosts up to april 15th.The crabgrass seed seems to be very soil temperature sensitive and no i don't know the needed temp.If it stays pretty warm and the right rains it usually is ready to graze in 30 to 45 days.Kind of a poor answer but the best i can do.The seed does much better if you can run a roller over the field after scattering the seed or after discing if you have an established seed bank in the soil.As the previous gentlemen pointed out it does not do good on clay soils, and Mr Dalrymple pointed that out to me when i asked about putting it on black gumbo.On a side note one of the old sandy land peanut farmers in our county about had a stroke when i told him i was going to plant crabgrass,he said he had fought it his whole life.
