I would like to try crossbreeding with Red Poll. The Canadian Livestock Records Corp has quite a few registered Red Polls listed for Alberta, none for B.C (I am on Vancouver Island). Are there any Red Poll a.i sires out there? I am curious about this tenderness gene they supposedly have, and weather it's true that their quite different genetic makeup makes for good crossbreeding. Would they grow as well and mature as quickly as my Red Angus x calves, with the added bonus of extra tenderness?

Don't know about Canada but their are several breeders here that have semen.

Yes they were identified by the USDA as one of the top breeds for tenderness.

They work real well in a cross breeding program.

Would actualy mature faster than Red Angus and grow just as well.

If you do a Telus search for Brady or Dennis Wobeser of Lloydminster, AB, you should talk to them. I think they imported some Red Poll semen to incorporate into their grass operation. Coulda been Devon semen too, I can't say for sure. If I hear of anything, I'll pm it to you.

If you go to the website redpollusa.org there is a Mr. Wiese in Kansas whose program is based on tenderness. He scans all his bulls and has them tested for tenderness genes and culls on lack of.

He has some nice looking cattle and I think could probably fix you up. I don't know the man nor have I ever talked to him, but I do like his cattle.

You may want to send an email or call the American Red Poll Association and ask them if they have any suggestions for you. Here is the contact info:

If anyone else is looking for Red Poll a.i sires, Alta genetics of Calgary Alberta has 7 different bulls available. Contact Dawn Elias, Client Services Representative, at 1-800-465-8858. Several of the bulls are approved for export.

The bulls are Willow Hotline, Willow Western Baron, Willow Western Nomad, Marc Raymond 06014, Dunroamin Predictable, Willow Mag's Superb, and Willow New Yorker. Dunroamin Predictable is the only one I could find e.p.d's on at redpollusa.org, but I couldn't make sense of them anyway! I can give you the phone number of Willow Red Polls if you want to know more about the bulls, p.m me. Also, Cattlemans Magazine has an article featuring Willow Red Polls, sorry don't know what month, but some of the bulls are pictured.
