red heifer calf

hey everyone , I raised black Angus cattle for several years now , but this year one evening I went to the barn and a cow was in the barn giving birth , everything went well so a couple hours later I came back to check on them and the calf was totally red , a red heifer calf .
I thought this sounded rare so I googled red heifer calf and couldn't believe just how rare this sounded to be , so I thought I would ask all you cattle farmers about it. thanks

To get a red calf out of black parents - both parents MUST carry the red gene. So, with this information, you KNOW the sire is a red carrier and so is the dam. Put it in your records. This happens to Registered Blk Angus herds also.
Edit: In a Registered herd, the calf CANNOT be registered with AAA, but it can be with the Red Angus Assn.

I agree this is pretty much the same thing I said when they asked in another thread minus the PB info.
They could be from Canada or somewhere else that Red and Black Angus aren't in separate Associations. Lot's of Black's carrying the red gene up here. Good breeders usually identify carriers now to avoid disappointed customers.

The red gene has been part & parcel of Angus genetics since day one. The only Angus association world wide that relegates its occurance to "defect" status is the short sighted AAA. :frowns:
