The calf I sold to a local girl for 4H. The show is next weekend. I think she has him finished perfectly. They have him right at 1500 lbs. Definately in the hwyt division. He weaned at 640lbs. We will see how he does against the perrinial favorites that cost thousands. I am probably going to give her a registered Gelbvieh heifer to do a heifer project with this year. He is 1/2 RA. 1/4 Char, and 1/4 my old black baldie Cookie cow.

His little sister. She will end up as a replacement in my buddies commercial herd. I sold him my commercial cows last fall.

Looks good 3way. Let me know what the judge says about him?

I have my thoughts but will reserve them till after the show.It is also hard to tell with just pics. You really need to see how they move.

I am fully aware that he is not the perfect steer but she got him for market price and worked her bu off with him. He shows real well for her and she should do OK. Like you say we will see what the judge has to say.

I didnot mean to take anything away from your steer. He looks really good. I just know what I THINK the judge will say. He will do great. Congratulat the young lady, It looks like she has done a wonderful job with him.
 
She is 12 yrs old and fitted him herself fron top to bottom. Her work ethic is incredible. That's why I will continue to help her any way I can. I plan on providing a Balancer heifer for her to use for a heifer project and then giving her the first calf. Of course it will be just my luck that it will be a bull and a great one at that and then I can cry when they knock his nuts off to show him as a steer.

The plan is to AI the heifer to Western Hauler, the NWSS cham Balancer bull and see what we get.

BTW I know the calf breaks behind his shoulder and could carry his muscle lower, however he is not cow hocked like he looks in the picture. Like a very cattle savy friend of mine said. If they judge him as a market steer and not as a seedstock animal he will do well.

They are all winners all the way around, 3waycross. Very good of you to offer her a heifer to show next year. I have 3 kids in 4H myself and it is quite satisfying to see them learn and enjoy and work toward a goal.
 
Very nice and well finished steer and nice of you to help the young lady out. The biggest problem I have with the steer is he's not located close enough to me to go in my freezer. Seriously though, when did he calve, I'm assuming he's an early 09 calf (late 08?).

I'm with the group that would like to know what the judges have to say and does she have a few more shows before he sells?

He was a late March calf. Scared me pretty good when he was born cuz he started out with his soles up and I thought for sure he was backwards. We ran to the house to get the puller and by the time we returned he had rotated 90 degrees and was then born within 10 minutes. He weighed about 75lbs at birth.

She has showed him a couple of times already in showmanship comp and won with him. Yes I too am anxious to hear what the judge says. I will be there. She was having trouble with his movement a month ago and had him trimmed. He has gained another 120lbs since then and is moving very well. He also really finished the last 30 days.

Grown out beautifully. I remember your thread when you were trying to pick them I think? There were 2 other steers you were trying to decide on. I can't remember which one I liked though :lol:

This girl took what we thought would be the top two. Just to prove we could be wrong the other calf she chose ended up finished a month ago and a real monster probably a frame 7.5 animal. but he finished early and marbled very well.

The other calf a red brockle face steer is in another county and will show this coming Sat. I doubt he is finished as well as this one but I will try to get some pics. Those kids also took one of my straight Gelbvieh calves(against my advice) so we will see how he finished. The boy who took him also got a Angus/Maine cross calf from a friend of mine and the word is he is a beauty. He is showing him heavy and the GV calf light.

I am surprised no one has commented about his little sister. She is the spitting image of her mom and if she milks as well she should be a heck of a calf raiser. That cow will never make 1100lbs and weans a calf heifer or steer over 625 every year, and breeds back like clockwork.

How old is the heifer in that photo anyway? Although if she follows in her mum's footprints it doesn't matter :nod:

News on the other steers is good. Always good to see how they grow after they've left the farm gate. Hope you're proud, you definitely should be. As should the industrious girl who's worked on him. Uni starts next week for me so hopefully I can get some before shots of our carcass show steers. I did get some shots of some yearling stud red angus bulls my friend has been breeding. She's only 20 and has really raised the standard of the herd.
 
The heifer is also a March calf. My guess is she will wean arounf 600. The RA bull they are out of has a 20 EPD for milk so she should be a calf raise like her mom.

I will AI the heifer to Julians bull Boaz in the spring. THAT should be one hellova calf.
 
He took 1st in hvywt class but did not make reserve or grand. They both came out of the middle class. They were both "CLUB" calves and well done with lots of hair.

Judge said the two he placed above him had cleaner necks. Said this calf carried too much muscle in his neck. I don't know what else was said but will post it if I find out.

I will post carcass results when they are available. probably 2 weeks.
