After a couple of the threads in recent days especially reminiscing about old times and sayings I grabbed a one of my old books last night and read for a couple of hours. Hog killin, signs, snakes lore and just plain livin in the Appalachian Mountains. I have always been fascinated when reading the FOXFIRE series of books. Have any of you read them or do you have any old practical books you refer too. I have one book that was used by beginning farmers in the 20’s and 30’s that covered crops cost and return as well as livestock.

I have a book called the Ready Reckoner which was published in 1954. It has all sorts of information in it from scaling lumber, determining the pitch and board measurements to how to calculate weekly wages. A lot of the stuff is still as valid today as it was when it was printed but there are a few things like wages that are quite dated. I just don't think many would work 5 days for $2.50.

You'd never know it from my actions and comments sometimes but I'm reading the Bible thru again. Been a while but have finished the NT and about half way thru the OT. Seems a lot of new stuff jumps out everytime I read it.

I have one of the Foxfire books which I have read several times. For Christmas I got several books. Journal (or Diary) of a Cowboy by Andy Adams. A biography of Charlie Goodnight. And two books that are collections of western short stories. I read Andy Adams and Charlie Goodnight first. They are stories of and by real cowboys. I am having a tough time reading the other books which are fiction, meet me in the street at high noon type stories, after having just read about the real thing.

The publishers of the ''foxfire'' series did one called ''aunt Arie'' I think is the name. It is about her life in the hills and the things she and her family went thru. It is the most heart felt and meaningful book you will ever read. She went thru times that would get the best of most people but she was thankfull and blessed for every thing that life gave no matter how small. She lived without any modern conveniences (electricity) all of her life. If you can find a copy this is one for you to read and share with any young people in your life. It will change your outlook on life when you think things are going bad for you!

Not sure how many times I've read the bible. I'm currently trying to read it 3 times a day. Setting In my truck of a morning, lunch time, and in bed at night. The morning and lunch read are short. The night read goes for a while sometimes, depending on when I get sleepy.

I have been toying with reading on line sermons about scriptures that appeal to me. Sermons central is where I go to find them. You may find it enjoyable. They usually have several to choose from.

I'll check it out....early morning is best for me during my "quiet time"....before my mind gets scrambled by things that really don't matter.

I tend to just pick the Bible up and read the parts that interest me which is usually Kings 1 & 2.

I have been trying to read the bible every day too, starting with the old testament. Leviticus was a hard book to get through. Almost done Job. It is amazing how little we have changed...still rebelious in nature

I read some of the Foxfire stuff long ago--pretty interesting stuff.
I need to get back to bible readin myself.
