re-establishing hay field

Our hay field has really gone down hill. There seems to be as many weeds as grass this year. We lighlty disked it last year and it really looks to have done more damage then good. I would like to spray w/ 2-4-D and plant some type of seed to try to keep any existing coastal/bermuda that is there. What would be the best grass seed to plant into existing pasture for hay production?
 
Sidney, you might be pleasantly surprised at how good it will look after just spraying the 2-4-D. Just getting rid of the competition and proper fertilization might do wonders.

Fertilization with plenty of pot ash should bring the costal back. You might also look at useing surmount insted of 2-4d.

Soil test, best money spent and go with the recommendations. The coastal should come back big time. You cannot take more out of the ground than you put in it with out the problems occuring that you describe, so soil test and know where you are and go with it.
 
We soil test and fertilize to it the best we can afford and limed the whole pasture about 4 yrs ago. It just really set it back it seems and brought about a lot more weed growth when we disced it.

Kill weeds

Do not plant any other seed that may compete with coastal, you will only increase your problem.

You may plant clover in winter.

I kinda have the same problem. my coastal field is mixed with a lot of bahia now and it seems the cows dont like it as much. is this really a problem? and if so what should i do?

It sounds like you had a lot of dormant seeds in the ground just waiting for a chance to sprout!! You didn't do anything wrong. They would have come up eventually anyway.

I might apply a good herbicide to the weeds first and then come along a little later with some fertilizer (based on soil tests). I agree with the other individual that the Coastal should pop right back but, if you're still worried and have the bucks, you could sprig in some new Bermuda sprigs (among the Coastal) with a borrowed/rented Hay King that digs a furrow, plants the sprig, covers it with dirt and then packs it.

Isn't a Hay King just a pasture renovator? I don't believe that it has anything to do with sprigging. For that you need a Bermuda King sprigger
