I had a heifer breed late last year - the rest of the group calved in June, but she had her calf in mid-October.
This morning she was in heat and had semen on her rear. I hadn't noticed her in heat earlier and was hoping she was bred already.
Some rookie questions:
What are the most common reasons for late rebreeding? I know that the correct and easiest answer might be to cull her but I want to make sure I'm not missing something obvious. She has the best temperament and body type of my heifers, but I suppose fertility should trump those traits.
I add selenium (we're pretty selenium deficient) to my cow's mineral, but maybe I need to be giving shots instead?
She appears to be in good body condition and general health and the calf isn't pulling her down.
What is a typical percentage of heifers that don't breed on time?
Is fertility a maternal trait? I would like to retain her heifer calf, but probably will not if she is likely to rebreed late as well.
