MM at her post, watching her cows... I won't leave them staked out alone by the road, so I spent the afternoon out there with a book and even took a nap for awhile. LOL.
 
you got some great looking cows an calves there.are you going to make your fresh heifer a nurse cow as well.or just use 311.love the way your making use of the grass in the road ditch.
 
Nice pics MM .Ever notice that those calves really jump and play about dark time . I like to stand and watch them play about sunset . Thats when you remember why you like this business .

BB -- yep, the heifer (#12) is my newest nurse cow. Have to wonder if a calf picks up some maternal instincts from its dam (or foster dam?) since this one has quite the wicked disposition when it comes to grafting calves. :lol: 12 was raised on 311, who has probably the worst attitude about accepting calves I've ever encountered yet. I have a new bruise on my leg, compliments of 12... Ah well, she will take the calves eventually. :P

Larry -- I've noticed the calves run at dusk; love watching them then. I'd just put the calves out in the new pasture this afternoon and there's something about new pens that gets calves all excited. :)
 
with 2 nurse cows your gonna have calves out your ears by fall.better buy beef calves so you can sell emm come fall..hol heifers you will keep an spring out an sale.

My husband says they used to stake their cows out on the roadside when he was growing up in Hawaii too, makes sense to me!
 
BB -- I've got two bull calves in the group at the moment, and one holstein/angus cross heifer calf that I'll probably sell before I go back to school or mid-winter. Other than that, yes they are all heifers that I'll raise to springers. Both cows will have 3-4 calves through the winter, and I'll let the cows raise them until it's time to dry both cows up (March or so)... I'm hoping to have all the heifers cycling and bred by 10-12 months of age so I only have to take them through one winter. Taking heifers through two winters kinda cuts into one's pocketbook. :P

MM..the black cow with the notation "new nurse cow"......... is she the holstein/angus cross that just calved? Udder sure has taken nice shape. I like her a lot.
 
Jonbri -- horse is a QH with a touch of Arab thrown in. He's a nice laid-back all around kinda guy and fun to take out for a trail ride. The way I graft calves on is with a lot of patience... and an occasional 2x4 to clarify the rules. :P Should have all the calves grafted on and running with the cows by the middle of next week.

TB -- yep that's the same cow. She's looking better now that the swelling's going down... nice level udder floor; I think she's going to do alright. Milking really heavy too; I have three calves on at the moment and she's still dripping milk when they're done (aka round enough I can roll them back to the gate, LOL).
 
ive thought about doing that too but everybody and their neighbor and their neighbor's brother likes to stop to tell me when theres a cow out, already. also i dont have any cows tetherable. also if i did that one time they would all be breaking thru the fence everyday to eat in the ditches. also, i might as well just feed the cows old beer cans and dollar store sacks b/c ditches around here are hardware disease waiting to happen... you should see what it did to that old stove that got out..
