Jim, those are the rose hip fruit of the ubiquitous wild roses, the provincial Alberta wild flower for Alberta, they were large and colorful this year. The sheep like to browse the leaves and the fruit. The Sharp Tail grouse I pictured eat a lot of rose hips also.

Thank you everyone glad you all enjoy the pics as much as I enjoy trying to capture the images of beauty I percieve in what most folks consider a desolate and barren prairie landscape. Most of the ranch is still virgin native praire, spared the settlers plow because of an incredible amout of stones and the fact it is a semi arid environment. Cosequently plenty of tee pee rings and old bison trails are evident once you know what to look for. Historically because of the massive bison herds and no control of fire this country has never had much for trees. The Blackfoot tribes to the south would intentionally set fires in hopes of the green regrowth attracting the bison. As regards the cold at 52 degress latitude north 6 months of legitamate winter should always be planned for. So far we have been blessed with a relatively warm November with day time temps hoovering around freezing.

I am recovering from a total left hip replacement 12 days ago so am layed up so I will be subjecting you to more cattle moving and bull loading pics shortly.

You made my Monday with those beautiful pictures. Love the lighting on the steer (?) facing left. The bird pictures are wonderful; what kind of owl and is that a roadrunner (haven't ever seen one).

Sorry you are laid up, but looking forward to your next photo display! I think everyone here enjoys them.

PDF, I'm with you, just don't want to deal with long winters. Already feeling oogie that they're calling for a blizzard at the end of January (Old Farmer's Almanac). What fun!

Jim every winter my manly thermalfortitude wanes, as kids we loved winter even though we froze our butts off. I am in need of some child like winter exuberance, like I say more so every year.

Gale, thank you, that is a short earred owl and the other one is a Sharp Tailed Grouse, commonly reffered to as a prairie chicken.

Nice pics... it does look cold with the pics of the horses... Those GV cows seem to maintain condition really well, my 16 year old Saler is a bit ragged around the edges now, but her calf has caught up 2 months growth, so she's still milking well, and she's early next year

The owl is really nice too, I have a good pic of a long eared owl I took a couple years ago, and the grouse we have around here are the ruffed grouse.. look pretty similar

great pics, but I think I'd miss the mountains if I lived there, meanwhile you'd probably feel claustrophobic around here lol
