Rain

I'll quit whining about the lack of rain now. Not getting a lot but getting enough so that things don;t get any drier. 6 miles east they still haven;t had a drop. We've 2.7 inches in the last couple of nights---------HOORAY. Of course it's too hot now for the grass to grow but the weeds are doing fine.

It's never too late for rain. Normally, we get most of our rain in May. Last year it didn't rain in May. Scared us and we sold a bunch of cows. Then in June it rained, in July it rained, in August it rained. We had more grass than we've seen in years on this place! We're dry at this point this year, too. But it will rain sooner or later; always has.

It's never too late for rain. Normally, we get most of our rain in May. Last year it didn't rain in May. Scared us and we sold a bunch of cows. Then in June it rained, in July it rained, in August it rained. We had more grass than we've seen in years on this place! We're dry at this point this year, too. But it will rain sooner or later; always has.

We subscribed to the "gotta rain sometime school ot thought" but 3 years of drought made us pretty pessemistic. After tonight they're talking about it turning off dry again for a while. The old saying around here is that we're never more then a week to 10 days from a drought. Thin school with poor water retention and it looks like a wasteland after a week with no rain.

the first dried out within an hour, the last one had the ground wet the next day. So I decided to move some dirt I had piled up
digging the pond out from a dry year 3-4 yrs back. Hit the pile
in second :-o peeled my nose off the windshield. Three inchs in was still adobe hard. More rain on the way so am thinking it can wait. Glad your getting some mositure dun

Congratulations! We're still a little dry but did get about an inch over the weekend. Enough to close some of the ground cracks anyway. Most of the heavy stuff is still hanging north of the rivers. They're calling for more today, yeah right. What we got sure beats the stuffing out of what we had though. Sure did perk up those horseweeds!

we've gotten more rain in the past few weeks than we can almost handle, to the point now that it's gunna take a week to ten days to dry it all out so that we can get something accomplished again.

it rained hard enough a coupla hrs from here to flood the irrigation ditches and make it hard to get up to the well locations in the area. our driveway and road was slicker'n snot on sat night, too. almost didn't get my car out and up the road.

Send some of that my way Jake. We're dry as a bone, cracks so big I can stick my hand in. Only thing growing is the weeds, I sprayed pretty much all weekend hoping it would rain but maybe it'll knock the weeds back and give the grass a chance to grow when it does rain.

I'm disking a field to plant WSG. The disk only cuts about 3 inches before it kicks up dust. The areas I had disked before the rain the disk sinks to it's hubs. The surface is just so baked hard that the rain can;t penetrate, just runs. But at least we're getting some, rain that is!

New York finally got RAIN! Got 1.8 inch Friday, and got another 1.2 inches last night. Of course, the hay is already headed out (short) and hay crew will be here today. We put it up baleage, so the rain won't stop the haying.
We have been in the high 90's for over a week - record for New York even if it was July or August. We just don't get that hot. Now they say it will be a high of 60's end of this week. Up & Down, dry & drown, that's the weather we've had all year. Oh well, don't get bored.
Flys are the worse I've ever seen it out here.

Flys are the worse I've ever seen it out here.

With the high humidity it has been over 110 degrees every day since Friday. Unheard of this early in the summer. The grass isn't growing and we have suspended haying for at least another week.

And I must agree about the flys. I spent an hour hand spraying most of the herd yesterday and wondering if the amount of $$ spent on Rabon blocks is rational. This is way too early for fly season. Usually it happens in August.

Every night there has been a thunderstorm-with hardly a drop of rain - and every night the lightning has been hitting a tree on the property.
The ancient willow tree near the house took a hit on a major giant limb Saturday night. It just missed two Baltimore Oriole nests. The limb tore down a large piece of the boundary fence at 2 am. The cows were yelling, the horses were running. I am sure they all "felt" the electricity in the ground.

The streams are very very low.
We could really use some rain and some cooler weather really really soon.
