Define Racketeering, not from a dictionary, but from your own words, pertaining to the meaning, I'll follow with a story once a few of ya'll respond.

I would say, Racketeering is using your power or the power of a group of ypur peers (whether it be real or via threat) to get somone or a group of folks to do something you want them to do.

OK, Here goes. What would you call a large company dealing in manufacturing and distributing Agricultural supplies, especially one of the biggest distributors of T-Posts. Take T posts for instance, up until about a week ago they had several hundred thosand in stock, but would not allow the "release" of them into a wholesale of resale situation. These particular posts were wholsaleling for about 3.00 a 6' post. When they finally "released" these posts they listed them a 4.20 a post, in quantities of 200 or more, steel has jumped pretty good lately, but not nearly that much to jusify an increase so drastic. They held them without distributing them until they could come up with a price and gouge the middle man, and retailers.The outfit that pulled this will not be named on here, but they always have made themselves "Hollier than Thou". I think it's dang near criminal and they ought to be ashamed of themselves, as we went several weeks with no posts.

Just bought 250 t-posts @ $4.39 a post. They told me when they ordered another batch they would be almost a dollar higher.

Nothing unusual. Lots of folks in many different areas hold their product until the market gets where they want it and then "its for sale".

Crowder - What we have here...is a failure to communicate. These boys are trying to say something to you and you ain't listening. They are trying to say that they are "...maximizing short - term profits so as to increase the likelihood of the long term fiscal viability of the company despite the relative certainty of consumer dissatisfaction."
In smaller words - they are gonna keep making more and more money - no matter how mad you get.

Not saying it doesn't happen here, but if caught doing it you would be prosecuted as it is illegal, old stock has to be sold at the price stated. Only new stock bought at the new price can be sold higher.

Before I make up my mind whether these guys are family or not, I gotta ask, did they also offer "protection" on your inventory, once you get the 200 posts on to your property?

I have not bought a steel fence post in a couple of years. when they got up around 3.00 i headed for the cedar glade up behind the house. Got a little chain saw gas and sweat in them but most of my dollars still in my pocket.

Nothing unusual. Lots of folks in many different areas hold their product until the market gets where they want it and then "its for sale".

Might not be unusual, but they can be reported to the proper authorities, and can be issued a fine for price gouging. Several, businesses in Buffalo, at the time of the icestorm, including the local MFA got slapped with hefty fines for gouging prices on keresone, and anything people needed when they were out of power for a week or more. They have also done this to gas stations, etc... If it can be proven, they can get a fine.
