Been looking at ways to save some coin for a new cow. So here is some of the stuff I have done.

Cut any unnecessary monthly reoccuring bills. When I got to looking I realized I had a bunch of folks getting into my pocket every month.

I am holding off on any new big purchases. Dang, I need a new tractor too. :frowns:

Started riding the scooter to work a lot more than in the past. It gets a little more than double the MPG what the Jeep gets.

Used a lower N fertilizer this year. Didn't fertilize all fields just the ones I will cut hay off of.

I brown bag my lunch but then again I always have. Can't see some of these folks going out to eat everyday for lunch.

I finally got home owners insurance thank heaven. I elected to not go with hurricane coverage because it cost $3000 more.

I don't start a tractor if I can do it with the 4 wheeler.

I only use the truck when I need to pull the trailer. $4.20+ per gallon.

I have been trying to consolodate my trips and get everything done I need in one swoop instead of running into Cleburne every other day. I try to do as much shopping in my little town as I can. I have just been saying NO to some purchases. We opted to not go on vacation this year so that we can build a patio off the back porch. I increased my deductable on my auto insurance and dropped some services I don't ever use. Watch me need those now...

Oh, I forgot about that. I also changed auto insurance when the homeowners insurance was dropped by my company. I shopped and saved over $800/year for the same coverage. I believe you should shop for auto insurance every 3 years. It seems that is about the limit before they get you jacked up too high.

You all are doing what I always have done. What to do if all this is all in place?
Could skip a meal, but what is left if you are too old for sxx?

I've unretired a couple of 50 y/o tractors to do the heavy share of the work around here. Using two gallons/ hr instead of 3 or more helps.

The other thing I've done is started working on a still. I applied to the Dept of treasury about a month ago. With some OP corn, near as I can figure I can make e85 for $1.50 to $2.00/ gallon. It ought to work pretty well in those ol tractors.

Still in the experiment stages on that though.

Riding an ol motorcycle rather than the truck to check fencelines.

We're making fewer trips to town and trying to consolidate ranch and house related trips. We haven't attended as many cow sales this spring as we have in past years. But that may be because we're not looking to add any more cows, not because of gas. We're still planning on the vacation, but will do more flying than driving.

we are cutting the tripps to town.from 2 a week down to 1.unless we really need something we dont go.trying to make a tank of gas last 2wks or a tad over.the 4 wheeler stays parked less we are checking cows.takes $20 to fill it up.flaboy the high gas prices hasnt stopped me from buying cows yet.

Cut way back this year. Wife had a birthday on Wednesday, didn't get her schit.

My savings has been cut way back

Most of my life I have tried to not live beyond my means. Having two in college simultaneously was expensive and it was easy to rationalize not having "extra" money to spend while that was happening. Now we are spending way to much just because it is there. I bought a spreader just last week that I did not have to have.

My mind is definately spinning on fuel costs, fertilizer costs and everything else. But, for me to say I am living prudent would be lying. I am embarrassed to be spending like I am. I am extremely thrifty in many ways but in other ways, I am doing stupid things still.

Hey Big bull, "buying a cow" was really a joke. I do need to buy some more though due to culling but I think I will wait till the bred heifer sale comes up in Oct unless I find some deals somewhere.

Yeah but Backhoe...as long as you have that trailer hooked up you qualify to stop in the feed store, the local cafe, and even the bank before you go home. You can wear your pants legs down in your boots and dip your good hat.

boogie i usually call a buddy of mine an see how much he wants for cows.an tell him how meny i want.an let him dragg an empty trailer home with a pocket full of money.

Now that we are off topic. You guys may remember I sold some calves to some ropers. Well, I sold some of my neighbors Brangus calves with mine. I hope to be able to buy those back after they have fed them and raised them up for me. :D

something would be bad wrong if this bunch ever stayed on topic.

Well I am to tight to pay what good eared cows are fetching right now.

flaboy, who was it you sold those brangus to again?

I changed bulls to retain heifers and came out decent both ways with buying and selling the bulls.
