Not picking on you Showmom, but just for informational purposes, the Mexican border is open and trading daily.

Are we free to export to Mexicco? I don't think so.

Gee, showmom, I guess I just didn't understand you. Dumbass me! You want to keep the Mexican border closed to exports because "the Mexican border being closed is part of the reason that cattle prices are up right now." Let's see.......keep it closed to exports because "the Mexican border being closed is part of the reason that cattle prices are up right now." Hmmmm? Let me give that one some more thought.....

Showmom, I think what we need to do on trade issues is what we said we would do with NAFTA and other trade agreements. We can't change our mind and break our agreements just because it suits us now, can we? Shouldn't we as a country live up to our agreements? Is it okay to use a flimsy excuse like questioning the safety of Canadian beef to further our own economic interests? I think not, but that's just my opinion. Seems like a bunch of you want a one-way sign at the borders! Export all we can, but import nothing? Interesting fantasy......

How many Canadian citizens are fighting with us in Iraq???
Let's don't forget Afghanistan, Showmom. Surely you remember the Canadians helping us over there, don't you? If it helps to refresh your memory, we had an Air Force pilot accidentally bomb some of their troops and kill four of them over there. And like good neighbors, I don't remember hearing them raise a lot of Hell over that!

Thanks for the great post Texan. It is unfortunate that some people find it easier to repeat stories they have heard than find out the truth.

txshowmom insinuates that Canada did nothing the day of 9/11
"Where were these countries when the U.S was attacked on 911."

Well ma'am we were busy landing re-routed planes that were supposed to land in the US. Remember the little fact that as soon as the planes hit the WTC US airspace was closed? Where do you think a lot of those planes went to? Many of the planes destined for the US came to Canada where they were recieved and then accomodations were found for the passengers, many of them in PRIVATE homes. We had fighter planes in the air as well providing escorts because we sure as hell didn't know what was happening either. There were also Canadian volunteers who were in New York to lend a hand as soon as they could get down there. As Texan writes yes Canada is in Afghanistan and in fact led the last tour of the international forces and yes a wacked out American pilot did kill 4 Canadian soldiers who were on training exercises in Afghanistan.

"How many Canadian citizens are fighting with us in Iraq???" Not many.
About the same amount as the US committed to the FIRST TWO YEARS of World War II. Do a bit of research and see when the US entered WWII. When England, Australia and Canada entered WWII in Sept. 1939 the US declared neutrality. While hundreds of thousands English speaking men lost their lives the US didn't want to pick sides. The US finally entered the WWII in Dec. 1941. Some Americans did come to Canada before that to enlist. Do a search on "World War II timeline" sometime. Nobody seems to complain about that but it is nice to be able to whine about Iraq isn't it?

No problem ma'am. I have a lot of good friends in the US and spend quite a bit of time down there myself, so I know full well of how little the average American knows about Canada. We are like a pimple on an elephant's butt to many down there, but when we get sat on long enough we will sure let you know.

I hope what I posted gives you a bit of information to use the next time you hear Canada chastised for "not doing anything". Some of us would have liked our gov't to have done a hell of a lot more but that's a whole other story.

No big deal txshowmom.Apology accepted :D ....... Like Amazed I have several good friends in The States as well.

Because their situation became our situation, we are dealing with it, they are realing with it.
Let me be sure I understand you, BP. You hate the average Canadian cattleman because of the Washington cow that a U.S. dairyman imported into his herd? The cow that has probably been responsible for our Northern border remaining closed, giving you the high calf prices that you say you need to make your operation work?

That seems to me like what you're saying, but when I read it, I realize that can't be it. That doesn't even make any sense. Where am I going wrong? How could you hate a fellow cattleman for that?

Anyway, how can you hate them for wanting the same things you want? You talk frequently about opening Japan back up. That's the same thing the Canadians want. Resumption of the export markets that they had. Using your philosophy, the Japanese cattleman should hate your guts. Using your philosophy, he has every right to want to keep our beef out of Japan forever.

Can't you see the hypocrisy of your argument? Can't you see the double standard?

The problem I have with the Canadian beef industry is that they have so many beef cows vs. their population. Their plight is unfortunate, many ranchers going under, but maybe this is the thing that will bring their cattle numbers down. By doing this everyone remaining wins. They have so far surpassed their domestic demand and rely so heavily on an export market that it borders on the edge of ridiculous. I have no problem with them getting their export markets open, if they can get their beef into Japan then without a doubt the US border will open. The fact is though that in our talks with Japan they are probably questioning us on what safeguards we have in place to make sure no more BSE cattle come down from Canada. This is my stance, Canada seek and open your own export markets, prove to those countries that you have the proper safe guards in place to ensure a safe beef product. In doing this you will prove to the US and to the US cattlemen that we can work together again, I just don't want to go through this all again, I have to much riding on the markets. Christmas Eve was a pretty black day in my little corner of the world, I don't know about yours.

That's a good post, Blackpower. I appreciate hearing your thoughts. I didn't think that you really hated anybody. And I agree with you on some things. Especially about last Christmas. Starting late in the afternoon of the 23rd when I heard the Secretary's press conference, all the way through January or February it seems, was pretty bad. And Christmas was pretty bleak around our place, too.

We've come a long way from those dark days, haven't we? Best markets ever! I like 'em as much as you do! Just keep in mind that the Canadians are still living in that black hole that we only had to look into. Its every day for them. The problems you express with their part of the industry are not the fault of any individual Canadian cattleman. If you don't like the way their export trade evolved into what you consider too many imports for us, blame it on your government. And think about all the stuff government messes up before you ask them to step in and fix it any more.

And one more thing I'd like for you to keep in mind. You say that your stance is for the Canadians to "seek and open your own export markets." Okay, I can understand how you feel about that. Just remember, that is something that the Canadian cattleman thought he had done. Unfortunately, he placed his trust in a trading partner that has turned out to be not very trustworthy. And I'm afraid its US!

I'm glad we finally found some common ground. I just got back from Husker Harvest Days and I'm afraid i'm a little tired and a tad tipsy. Let's continue this conversation tomorrow.

ME, TOO! Maybe we could all try to concentrate on that. All the things we have in common, instead of the few differences we have!
