I am going to have a few heifers calve in winter sometime. So far this year I have fed 6 rolls. So my question is how much more hay can I expect to feed next year? I know it depends on temp and other factors, but does anyone have any guesses?

A cow eats about 3% of her weight each day. Estimate the total weight of your herd x 3% x the number of days you usually feed hay and that's roughly how many pounds of hay you will need to get thru the winter. Depending on the size and weight of the hay bales you buy, you can then fairly accurately calculate how many bales you will need.

In central KY figure on 3.5 rolls/cow (my bales are 4x6)

And remember the old boy scout motto. don't forget to get a couple of bales extra when they are cheap incase you have a drought in the summer and prices go way up.
