at the risk of sounding like a complete dummy, what does it mean when cattle converts food.. food conversion?? thanks

they eat lesser quality feedstuffs (like grass or grain) and convert it to higher quality proteien food (like meat)

Not all cattle do this equally efficiently and this is measured in feedlot tests of young bulls. A ratio of 5:1 would be considered good and 8:1 poor just as an example. It means the bull has eaten 5 pounds of feed for every 1 pound of weight he gained.

Welcome to the boards Liza14! Don't be afraid to ask questions, the only dumb question is the one you'll not ask... no question is dumb. Many, many very knowledgable folk on the board that are happy to answer them for you. Don't worry about the few "self proclaimed" know it alls, that from time to time make a smart remark or have something rude to say. Like I said, luckily they are just a few.

Over the years some questions have been asked many times, so you can also use the "search" tab at the top of the page and enter "key" words to find past answers.

Again welcome,
Alan
