What age do you normally consider culling your cows from the herd?
Like the responses before me - I do pretty much do not give a rats azz about age.
If she can have a calf - raise it and not cause me any probs - she stays.
Had one die on the place a few years ago - over 20 years of age - ticked me off - only a few weeks before dropping her calf - died because she got cast between a couple of bales. Can't complain she gave me one every year - and a few times she gave me twins.
Push button cows that know the country, know how to move from pasture to pasture, come to the call, drive easy, go through the chute and squeeze with no ruckuss, raise a calf, cause you no grief and more - are worth more than their sale weight at any sale barn.
At present, along with all the "kids" in the field, we have multiple ten plus year old girls, a couple over 14 or 15 and I think three that are coming close to 18. All have good feet, good mouths and they sure keep the kids in line.
"pdfangus said - I will cull a three year old if she weans two sub par calves."
I completely agree and I wish more people would think like this.
If more people would do this there would be far less trash in the fields.
In closing this is something to always remember:
A few decent "elders" can make a herd very easy to handle when conditions are tough.
Best to all
