We have 6 heifers. On what's there for pasture, some hay, and some commodity feed 15%. One started with some loose stool a few days ago. She is eating fine, active, and keeping up with the rest of them. It's not to the point of pure liquid, but definitely not solid. Also noticing that when she goes, it's only a small amount and she seems to try sometimes and nothing happens. Before I call the vet, any advice as to what we could do for her? Is it safe to leave her be and see if it clears up as long as she doesn't act differently? There is no blood or mucus mixed in it either. Just small amounts at a time and you can see it on her tail as well... Thank you for any suggestions.

I would probably keep an eye on her for a few days. is it possible she got extra feed? too much high protein hay, overeating fresh grass in the pasture, or maybe the cubes (which I do not use) can all cause loose manure for a while until the rumen gets back to normal.

Age? Weanling? Yearling? Bred heifer?
The straining you're describing would suggest the possibility of coccidiosis. They don't all have a bloody mucoid stool. Might be a good idea to collect a sample and take to your veterinarian for a fecal examination.
