Whether or not it was too soon is strictly a personal thing. There are a lot of people who castrate at birth, and there are an equal number of people who wait to castrate until branding (usually a month or so old), because it generally allows the calves to grow and put on weight better due to the testosterone in their system. The band (along with the scrotal sac) should fall off within a week, possibly two.

I banded my bull calf at one week. He is now two months old, and the shriveled up sac and band is still there. Have to do another one any day now.

We band all our calves within about 24 hours of birth. It takes at least 3 weeks and usually longer for them to dry up and fall off.

OK its been séances 2/14/07 that he got castrated and the ban is still there, he was laying on his side yesterday and my wife and I were looking at him and it looks like maybe there is nothing in the skin that was ban but skin? This the first time we have don or seen a calf castrated so we were wondering if he still a bull?

When you band, you have to make sure that both the testicles are in the scrotum before you release the band. Otherwise he is still a bull. If you are sure they were in the scrotum then they are still in there. They can't get back past the band.

I stand corrected. I've seen the scrotum hang on for the length of time mentioned in older calves, but not in very young ones. I apologize for my error.

It does get disconcerting when you band a bunch of week old calves and the sacks hang on some of them it seems like forever and some of them are gone in a couple of weeks. Never have figured it out

That is interesting, and I can sure see where it would make a person scratch their head and wonder. :???:

I think it is a weight and squeez issue. Meaning the testes are not much to squeez and they do not weigh anything. I have had 300 lb calves that were small for their age take longer than the well endowed for their age.

Could be, but all of ours weigh within a few pounds of each other. We did have to go to the Tribander instead of the cherrios type because of very fat scrotums on sum calves. I didn;t pay much attention to which ones took the longest to fall off. We had a yearling that was banded with the callicrate deal. when we got ready to butcher him some 5-6 months later the dried up leather purse was still there.

OK I fill better now. As far as making sure there were in the scrotum I’m not that sure, the man wow did the castrating is in his late 80’s and has don many of them when he did it he had me fill the scrotum and said fill them there both in there, but I didn’t fill any thing?? But I guess he knows.

I have a newbie question - what happens if you don't get both when you put the band on?
ok I know what happens ;-) but what can you do?
how can you repeat - you already got rid of the sack

After you but the band on you count again to insure there are 2. If not, you cut the band off and try again.
