SAN JOSE, Costa Rica —

An American senior citizen killed an alleged mugger with his bare hands, and his traveling companions aboard a tour bus fended off two other assailants in the Atlantic coast city of Limon, police said.

A retired member of the U.S. military aged about 70 put suspect Warner Segura in a head lock and broke his clavicle after the 20-year-old and two other men armed with a knife and gun held up their tour bus, Luis Hernandez, the police chief of Limon, 80 miles east of San Jose, said Thursday. Segura was later declared dead, apparently from asphyxiation.

The two other men fled when the 12 senior citizens started defending themselves during the Wednesday attack. Afterward, the tourists drove Segura to the Red Cross where he was declared dead. The Red Cross also treated one of the tourists for an anxiety attack, Hernandez said.

The tourists left on their Carnival cruise ship after the incident and Hernandez said authorities do not plan to press any charges against them.

"They were in their right to defend themselves after being held up," he said.

Hernandez said Segura had previous charges against him for assaults.

In a media statement, Miami, Fla.-based Carnival Cruise Lines said the Wednesday incident occurred during an outing at a Limon beach which a group of a dozen passengers had arranged on their own.

"According to witnesses, while sightseeing at a local beach, the group of guests were approached by three assailants, one of whom was armed," the statement said.

"The victims struggled with the armed perpetrator, and were able to disarm him. During this process, the gunman's two accomplices fled the scene. In the course of disarming and restraining the assailant, he died from apparent asphyxiation."

Neither the Costa Rican police nor Carnival identified the man involved in the struggle with the mugger.

The cruise line said the guests were questioned by local law enforcement and then returned to the ship. The ship's departure from Limon was slightly delayed to await their return.

"All of the guests involved, who had booked the cruise together as a group, have opted to continue with their vacation plans. Carnival is providing full support and assistance to the guests," according to the statement.

The ship, The Carnival Liberty, continued on its scheduled itinerary, with a port call scheduled in Colon, Panama.

It is sad that a life was lost that was obviously on the wrong track. Somebody is also going to have to deal emotionally with taking it.

Around here we just lost 2 kids in a high speed pursuit with the third in critical condition after a pit maneuver by the troopers. Drugs and birds flying out the window. They had to get the 2 kids out of the trees as they were thrown there as the car was flipping.

I never realized this happened when I was growing up.

I saw that accident on the national news to day. Fox and CNN. Sad.

well the tour group had to protect themselves or get robbed an probly shot.your right they will have to live with killing that robber.but if one of their group got shot an died in the robbery.they would have to live with that as well.i could live with killing someone if they was going to hurt me my family or friends.

If that had happened here, the 70 year old man would have to face a grand jury to "investigate" his intent at the time...was he really afraid for his life...was he really afraid for the life of his friends, blah, blah, blah. Then the criminal's family would file suit against the 70 year old man for the death of their loved one who probably would have become a brain surgeon and made a gazillion dollars and been able to support his poverty stricken parentsto the tune of that same gazillion dollars.

All I can say is hats off to the Costa Rican law enforcement for telling the 70 year old man he was well within his rights to defend himself and to go on and enjoy his trip. And good for the man and his friends to decide to go on and finish the trip. I hope his reputation precedes him into Panama. 8)

No doubt. Its still sad that folks are raised in a way that lets them get to the point where they are predators of their own kind.

I know people who were raised by the scum of the Earth in lousy environments and turned out to be fine people, and I know people who were raised by fine people in good homes who became the scum of the Earth. Everybody has a brain and is able to make their own choices as to how they are going to live their lives.

You are right again.

We can choose to call it what it is or try to do something about it.

If you break it down it comes back to drugs.

I agree a lot of it has to do with drugs, but not all of it is. There is a lot of violence today that is gang related, and before anyone says "well the gangs are about drugs" most of the violence now with gangs isn't. Its about who can be the most ruthless, dangerous, violent gang on the block. They think by beating, and killing people, they are gaining respect, when in reality it is only fear they are getting. They have a skewed perception of what respect really is.

Well said.

what has it come to when you are mugged, and have your head stamped on, and you have to spend 21 hours in a Police cell. This happened to my Son last weekend. Thankfully he is OK, the cut on his head is healing well.
