I have been invited to MTSU to speak to their foreign scholarship students about cattle behavior and a general overview of beef cattle breeding. Most of these students have never stepped foot on a farm or have ever see a cow close up. I am thinking about putting a power-point presentation together to help with the visuals. I am open to ideas on how to cover a general overview in 30 minutes. Help a brother out

I say invite them to the farm after you speak to them take them out in the pasture.

The grass is always greener on the other side.

Moving cattle is like pushing a magnet with another magnet.

Oh great, now city slickers are going to think they know cattle behavior after watching a 30 minute presentation!

I get invited to elementary schools all the time. I know its not the same thing. They seem intrested in things in this order: 1. Ruminant digestion 2. Cuts of meat 3. feeding 4. Herd health

99% of the students are from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, UAE, Iraq, Oman, etc. Call me a paranoid racist but I am not comfortable from a bio-security standpoint of having them out to the farm.

Good ideas.

You can tell them anything. When they don't know anything they can't tell if you are telling them the truth or feeding them a line of BS. That theory in education has been working for professors all over this country for the last several decades. And it is not like they will be going back to the middle east and starting a big ranch or something.

Wow, what an honor. It would probably be better not to get your graphic aids from Jo, or Hook. Probably not AC either.

Wow. What a low blow and I was going to offer Hoss some pictures of real cattle to use in his powerpoint presentation instead of him having to use those pictures of the cat hocked things he thinks are cattle. Instead I'll sit in my corner and pout. I would offer this as a closing photo.

     You are a mess Jo!

I am actually going to use a Gelbvieh cattle in the pics. Most of the pics will be from my farm. I know the Imbalancer pics are all copyrighted :cry2:

Try to get a repro tract from the butcher for a visual aid, refer to temple grandins work for the cattle behavior aspect, and include some aspects of how nutrition affects breeding back etc.
Make sure you have a pigs repro tract handy as comparison to a cows. They'd like that.

Cover the conversion of grass and other feeds into milk and meat.
How lands not suitable for crops can be utilized for animal production.
Define purebred, straight bred, cross bred, and hybrid vigor.

Explain that daddy cows have horns and mommy cows don't.

I have to talk for an hour. Should be interesting......

This will sound silly, but it's what I do a lot. You could carry on a conversation about cattle for well over an hour with no problem. Just think of the questions that they "should" ask you if they really want to get educated fast. Write them down, and go through and answer them one at a time. 15 question should get you thru an hour no problem.

i have a power point presentation that I did for a group a couple of years ago....

focus was on AI breeding but it contained the basics of cattle managment.....

I can dust it off and put it on drop box if you want to look at it....

Hoss

I posted and it has not shown up that I have a power point that I did a few years ago that was basic cattle management and a strong presentation on AI breeding.....

While I was looking for that one I found another that I had forgotten the is Beef Basics and full of photos and pretty broad spectrum....Has some Virginia Specific stuff that could easily be deleted or replace with little impact....

I can put both on Drop Box and send you a link and it will at least give you a starting point instead of having to build from new

That would be excellent pdf! Thanks.
I have about 13 slides put together so far. Mostly introduction to cattle. I will cover feeding, breeding and handling too.

I will put them on drop box and send you a link....

you do not have to have a drop box account to access them....

I just looked at both and the one about synchrony is pretty much all about synchrony but the other on was designed for beginning beef farmers....we had a program for them a few years ago....
