Son of Butch
Well-known member
born: Prince Rogers Nelson in Minneapolis, Mn.
I forgot how big 5' 2" Prince truly was once upon a time on the music scene.
Born in the same year as Madonna and Michael Jackson, Prince was #1 in the world for records sold for the entire '80s
decade. He was nominated for 32 grammy awards winning 7 he also won 4 MTV awards 1 Golden Globe and 1 Oscar.
Not bad for being the guy who opened a concert for the Rolling Stones in 1981 and was booed off the stage.
(amazing that Keith Richards out lived him) Proof that Prince was ahead of his time, he wrote "1999" in 1982
He was an incredibly talented musician. Rolling Stone ranked Prince 27 on the list of 100 greatest artists.
Professional guitar players have called Prince 1 of the 10 greatest guitar players of all time.
Pianists have stated he was even better on the piano than guitar.
Studio musicians recall him picking up their own instruments and playing them better than anyone in the room.
On his first album Prince is credited with playing 27 instruments.
He was reputed to have wickedly good basketball handling skills, with a killer outside shot and never miss lay ups.
Over 100 million in record sales Prince is #1 all time in his genre of Funk ahead of #2 Stevie Wonder and 36th over all
behind Neil Diamond and ahead of Kenny Rogers and Bob Dylan.
A prolific songwriter he wrote and gave away more than a dozen songs that hit the charts for other musicians.
He was about to give "Little Red Corvette" away to another when his agent stopped him and convinced him to record it for himself. He frequently did $10 dance parties for up to 200 people at his own home and surprise free appearances around Mpls. with local muscians. Rules to attend a $10 Prince home dance party were no alcohol, no smoking and no swearing allowed, he was considered a good neighbor by those around him. Current speculation is his death will be ruled percocet related as it had been previously reported he was in need of hip replacement surgery which he refused due to his Jehovah Witness beliefs having converted 15 years ago.
The last song he ever performed in concert the week before his death was "Purple Rain"
