7 percent? What size do most folk sell their feeders in your area?

Due to the drought, most people have been selling light calves. I like to wait until they are about 500-600 pounds, but the drought has made that management practice impractical.

I think the corn and hay prices will drive a lot of people out this year.

6 Weight are the most common like Dusty said the drought has changed the rules people are trying to just hang on now.
Look at the numbers at the sale.
Fuel, drought and feed are going to put a lot out that don't have a sharp pencil.

the hay an corn prices are in the drivers seat.when the drought breaks all the way hay will come down.but that wont happen for 2 or 3yrs.since im trying to buy cattle ive talked to alot of people.an they have cut their herds severly.an they know people that has done the same.1 man sold off 30 reg beefmaster cows an bred heifers.an he is down to 25 cows now.

You are right on the hay as people are going to want to stockpile so they don't get in this jam again and with fuel prices i don't see reasonable hay prices for at least a couple of years.

Sure looks like the folks in your area are getting ready for a good year, up here prices are still real low but we'll see the increase in a monthe or so.
Good luck to y'all.

Looks good for the coastal ranchers that have had rainfall, could be another tough year for the central part of the state.

We have seen an upswing in feeders around here of late. The lights are still getting hammered but the heavies have held nice.. We have 120-130 odd head of steers that we are shipping to a feedyard in a while.. Phone keeps ringing from the barns trying to talk us out of it or wondering if we will have any extra to send in... Supply is down, most everyone shipped in November and december as they were scared the prices were going to get even lower... We took the risk but than our partner decided he wanted to send a load out to a feedlot.. Need to get some one a scale to get a better idea of what they are weighing.. The one that stepped on my foot weighed no less than 10,000 pounds... Okay.. MAybe more like a 7 weight.

Good thing I picked up those light heifers at the auction when I did. If we get a wet spring, prices are liable to escalate. There are many who cut way down and need to build the herds back up.

Anything female is going to be hard to come by. During the culling, folks retained their best stock and the heifers from the stock are likely worth keeping.

There still be a spring crop of steers.

News reports here this morning that the blizzard in Co, Neb, etc was affecting our markets (Ky markets). A couple of barns cancelled sales last week for lack of buyers, they said.
Those numbers at Crockett are down because those calves were sold last year????

As I was reading this I was thinking about you buying them heifers. You might have got in a head of the curve. More people going to be buying like you and push them prices up.

Funny thing is, I wasn't there to buy them. The prices were just so good I had to take them. And, by then, I had already let some go that I should have bought.

You should have seen the boss lady when I came home with them in the trailer. "What did you do.....?" When I told her what I paid, everything was okay. To tell the truth, it is a good thing she was home with the grandbabies. Otherwise, it may have taken three trips!

A lot of the sales in the eastern part of Texas were down because of wet weather. Athens had just over 800 and VanZandt had 520 head. Prices were stronger than before Christmas. Several buyers indicated that they had customers who were wanting to let the pens dry out (Texas, New Mexico Oklahoma and Colorado).

Just marketed calves and 6 wts brought $102; 7 wts, $96.5 and 5 wts $119; that's for steers. Heifers, 6 wts, $93.5, 5 wts $100.00 and 7 wts $91.5. Down 20 to 25 cents from last year but about what we expected considering the weather situation out west and market being lower.

No, Fort Scott Livestock Market. It looks like Joplin was pretty comparable from reading the market reports.

Crockett has been down all fall those people where hit hard last summer with drought and a lot are barely hanging on.
Had to sell cows early to hold on.
If you could find hay it was 60 dollars and up.
I hauled 50 rolls up to my cousins just 45 miles north of me his pasture's were burnt completely up, and I was knee deep in grass.
It was semi after semi leaving this area going north with hay.

I watched this auction in person these are real prices.
