Kind of a sad day around here- as our old female Border Collie died last night....Kids named her Penny- and the grandkids (that she helped raise) called her Pretty Penny.. She was 9 year old....
She was really aging fast- and had got awful grey and kind of stove up like me in the cold weather...We didn't breed her last fall just for that reason...
Then the middle of last week I think the dogs had a run in with a coyote- as the old male (Jud) is still gimping around here on 3 legs - and she just seemed more stove up and stiffer than ever....Last night she didn't come when we called her-and I found her this morning.... I think she may have got hurt internally....
Sure gonna be different moving cows home this fall- as she was always the one that helped me the most on that trip.....

Penny with a litter of puppies...We figure she raised almost 100 pups in her life- and has pups scattered all over the state and country--Wash., Iowa, Wyo, etc...Most ended as good cow dogs...

I couldn't find any pics of her without pups- I don't know if I took many of her working, but was a great cow dog...Her and old Jud worked so good together with him being the finesse dog and her being the gogetter to keep him going....I sure hope the year old pup I kept last spring (Sam) will be as much of a gogetter...

She loved the kids and the grandkids- usually jumping up into their bed to have her pups (sometimes even when they were in it) :shock: Tough on Grandma- as she always thought of Penny as hers- as she made a special trip to Roundup to pick her up......
 
Oldtimer, I'm very sorry for your loss of Penny. She sounds like a very special dog. You can sure get attached to the good ones.
 
Sorry you lost her OT, but you gotta think what a wonderful life she had with you.

We lost our 2 shelties last year within a few months of each other, 15 years old. It was sad, but in a way, we could be happy that we gave those dogs the best life we could.( And they paid us back a hundred times over ).

If more people had pets and could properly care for them the world would be a better place.
Pets put things in perspective.

It isn't ever easy to lose a good friend like that. You have lots of photos and memories, though. I like to think that we see our good dogs again one day. I just lost a weiner dog I had for 6 years this last December. Got run over. It was harder for me than it was for my sons.
 
Thanks everyone--Yep Grandkids were pretty shook- and there were a few tears shed (from all) when I told them....Lots more tears when I told them how I found her- because I spotted the old male (Jud) laying out east in the yard-- went over there and he was laying with his head and paws on her body (he'd spent the night there) :cry2: - and wouldn't leave til I took a leash and led him to the house... I then hauled her off and buried her- and Grandma said old Jud howled all the time I was gone :cry2: - then when let out of the house went back to the spot where she had been and stayed there :cry2: until I called him to come to the corral with me.....Then he just laid in the house most of the day- or followed me every step I made.....
Leinie (oldest granddaughter) came out yesterday afternoon- and she was doing better after I took her on 4 wheeler and showed her where I buried Penny...Then she helped cheer Grandma up by getting Grandma to help bake cookies....

I took old Jud with me all day today to work cows and worked his buns off- and it seemed to help him....
 
Sorry to hear about that OT. I felt that dogs are very much part of the family, and they just don't last long enough.

Dogs are very smart, especially border collies, and I'm sure pennie will be irreplaceable.
 
Our neighbor arrived with the new puppy last night.. She is 6 weeks old- but the runt of the litter so kind of tiny...But as I told Grandma- I've had good success with the runts in horses, bulls and dogs....We named her Tess...

Since Tess comes from Canada- I had the grandkids convinced they would have to learn how to speak Canadian so she could understand them.... ;-) :lol: :P Worked until Leinie remembered her trips to Canada and told me I was fibbing again..... ;-) :lol:

the new puppy is just to cute.an your grankids have sure taken to her.dont know if the granbaby likes her or not.
 
Sorry about your old girl, but it looks like she is well replaced. That's a great lookin pup and I'm with you on those runts, I like em too. I'll bet her and that baby will be inseparable in a couple years.
