Yesterday we preg checked the heifers. 55 out of 58 were bred. The Vet called 38 of them to be bred on the AI date. So that is 69% from the AI. Now I just need to find someone who really wants a pot load of bred heifers. It wouldn't hurt if said buyer had deep pockets and wanted into the cattle business really bad. But I was really happy with the way they bred up.

I sync'ed them so we AI'ed for a little less than 2 hours. I did the 7 day protocol. I inserted the CIDR's and gave them a shot of GrHN. Seven days later I pulled the CIDR and gave them a lute. We bred them 54 hours later with another GrHN. I turned the bull in three days later and left him for 60 days. The Vet said that they were all bred within 45 days.

I didn't do the actual AI work. There is a guy here who was a couple years ahead of me in school which makes him 64. His Dad was a Vet. He learned to preg check and AI while he was still in high school. Basically all his adult life he has done the reproductive work for one of three local dairies (1,000-4,000 cows). So he has spent his life with his arm up inside a cow.

Hi Dave, it sounds like you're using the same protocol as we plan to, starting this Sat: GnRh with CIDR on Sat; remove CIDR and give prostaglandin (Lute) the following Sat; then (unless we see heats earlier) do the AI and second GnRh on the following Tues. So, 7 day sync, then 3 days (max) to AI. I hope 3 days isn't too long; if we get them finished up with the 7 day sync early in the day that Sat., maybe we should shoot to AI on Mon eve.... Did you see any heats before 54 hrs? Thanks!

Did I see any heats? I pulled the CIDR out on a Thursday at 10:00 AM. Friday night and Saturday morning it was a love fest out in the pasture. 60 heifers all coming in heat at the same time. We AI'ed all of them starting about 1:30 PM on Saturday. I would think that you should be breeding on Monday depending on what time of day you pull the CIDR on Saturday. if you pull the CIDR in the morning on Saturday the timing would put you breeding in the afternoon on Monday. I put the clean up bull in a couple days later and I kept an eye on him. He never showed any interest in the heifer at all until three weeks later which tell me that they all cycled on the sync date.

Thanks, I had been a bit concerned that Tues am was getting a bit late. I think we will tell our AI guy that we'll be watching them closely and he should be ready to do them Mon afternoon. Glad you had a successful run. We aren't using a cleanup bull, so it'll be back to the tank if we have some that don't take!
