My opinion only so don't bet the farm on this but;
With the snowstorm last weekend hitting from Louisiana to the Midwest and all of the eastern US most of the stockyards have been closed this week. Another storm hits the east coast today although not as widespread.
I predict that as soon as the weather breaks and sales open back up the price for slaughter cows and bulls will be lots higher. It will take a couple weeks to build up inventory and it will ease back down a little.
It's not a get rich thing but if you have cull cows and bulls to sell an extra .20 on a 1500 lb animal is $300.

It could go either way. The effect of the cow plant fire will also factor in but it will all take time to work thru the system.

Demand should go up after the consumers eat the last of the french toast and return to a more normal diet. It may take a couple of weeks to level out but there could be some wild swings in local markets.

The big thing is will conditions be good enough for people be able to move and haul cattle on a local level.

We have temps above freezing, yet the snow doesn't melt. Sheet of ice 4-6 inches thick covers the ground. Hard to pull a trailer anywhere around here.
Where's those guys advocating not feeding in the winter and just letting them graze stockpile? This 4-6 inches of ice might change their minds...

stockpiler here, and yeah I don't see anyone bragging on their cows busting through a couple inches of ice to grab a mouthful of grass. and we have poor stockpile.

what do you all think calves will do? have some 4-5 weights I weaned early due to poor stockpile.

I think its going to be the best you have ever seen. A cattle report came out today and futures prices went down but thats all paper trading. East of the Mississippi no cattle have moved this week. The demand is still there and will be stronger with better weather.
And yes my cows are still on grass but we barely got any snow and no ice.

Local stores were almost out of beef because of the projected snow here. Also, don't discount the nationwide fridgid temps that are going to be across the country this weekend. A lot of cattle won't go to market because of the temps.

It looks like you are going to miss most of the snow this weekend, too. We are expected to get 4-8 inches.

Same here. I saw a pickup with a trailer load of firewood jack-knifed in the ditch yesterday.
People can make bad decisions when hungry or cold.

I am 74 years old and they went to indoor plumbing long before I was born. Sorry that they still are using outhouses in your neighborhood.
My granny and granddad carried water and used an outhouse until about 2004.
Our oldest three kids got to use it many times, but by the time the youngest three came along, granny and granddad were living in a trailer house.
The young three were homeschooled, so we made a field trip to the farm for them and the local homeschool group. They each took turns at having the experience.

No reason to be sorry, we picked this little town. We are just a little behind the times here in TN. Lol, I'm sure with the size of your property you have left your human waste out there without sitting in the wood box. I have a friend, while growing up in the 70s, that had property in Wisconsin with an old barn made into a 1800s home. Even I know what a cold seat is.

My 35+yo neighbor grew up here in the mid 1990s about 15 min south of my place. He told me that they didn't even have electricity growing up, til about the time they paved the roads around here. Roads were 2 trac trails until then. Didnt even start school until he was a pre teen.

You have it easy up there with your modern comforts...
