Nope, derby winner faded badly in the stretch, finished 8th. 2 week turn around is tough, the horse that won didn't run in the derby and was well rested.

That is something I don't like all the new fresh horses coming in. Having said that all the previous champs have won it this way so don't want to see it changed.

Only about once per decade the Preakness is won by a fresh horse.

The Prestige of the Derby and Triple Crown overflows the Derby with the top 20 or so horses, 6 or 8 who aren't.
But after all you can't win the triple crown without first winning the Kentucky Derby.
The Preakness only had 10 horses this year. More than a dozen Derby horses skipped the Preakness this year.
The Belmont is where fresh horses that skipped the Preakness really come into play and can make it so very hard
to win a triple crown.

Winner - Tapwrit (6-1 odds) time 2:30.2 finished 6th in the Kentucky Derby skipped the Preakness
2nd - Irish War Cry - (3-1 favorite) finished 10th in the Kentucky Derby skipped the Preakness

Tapwrit is a grey Linebred colt with Seattle Slew the great grandsire of both his dam and sire

Sired by Tapit 16 hands, heterozygous for dominant grey gene, stud fee $300,000 (highest in the nation)
50-50 chance of siring a grey foal when bred to non-grey
Tapit finished 9th in the Kentucky Derby (winner Smarty Jones) entered the Belmont - scratched - lung infection
Tapit has now sired 3 Belmont Winners 2014, 2016, 2017 and the 2015 runner up Frosted

Tapit sired by Pulpit out of a grey mare Tap Your Heels an Unbridled daughter
Pulpit sired by A.P. Indy (Seattle Slew x Secretariat) A.P. Indy won the 1992 Belmont - 3rd fastest in Belmont history
Unbridled won the 1990 Kentucky Derby then 2nd in the Preakness and 4th in the Belmont
