I earned my PHD before I got my drivers permit, and maybe the quality was better back then. I mostly use a 3 point auger now, but occasionally have need for the manual variety.
Where can I buy some really good old fashioned post hole diggers? It ain’t happening at Walmart or Atwoods.

Northern Tool, Rural King, and many other places sell them. Don't ask me about the quality, I just know they have them available.

Interesting. I’m the most uncoordinated person I know. Probably take me half a lifetime to relearn those backwards diggers. Ain’t got that long.

Although, my darlin companion is a southpaw. She’d probably dig right in with those. Maybe I can buy them and let her do all the digging.

Pretty sure it was Northern Tool where I ordered this last one from. Had fiberglass handles and good reviews, apparently from folks who don’t have rocks in their dirt.
 
Go to few flea markets and you can find a set of the old heavy-duty diggers. I have three sets I may have $20 each in and gave the Amish boys that built a shed for me another set with a tamp bar.

The electric company guys I have seen use the backward kind like listed about to clean out pole holes.

I've got a set of the backwards diggers. They make life easier once you learn to use them. Mine are all steel and pretty heavy so instead of wearing yourself out digging you wear yourself out picking them up out of the hole. I got them at TSC years ago.
 
Razorbacks are pretty decent. Used to be sold at Home Depot, Lowes and Ace Hardwares around.
 
I have a pair of backwards diggers (The Hole Deal brand) that I use for cleaning holes out behind the skid steer. The "normal diggers" I've had don't work 5-6' deep in a hole without making it very wide at the top.

With this style I didn’t have to widen the top of the whole, but I was only going 4’ deep. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004FE7HY4

Youll get used to it pretty quick. I used them off and on from age 15, as Dad had gotten a pair when a powerline crew left them after putting in the line that ran across our place in1965. I gave them away when I moved from the old place a few years ago. For decades, every lineman truck carried a pair and that's all they used to set 'telephone' poles. Now, almost every line truck has a powered auger..

Ace Hardware tho, sells some pretty good conventional diggers, or did a few years ago, I still use the ones I got from Ace in 2009.

The problem comes when you switch back from 'backwards' diggers to conventional diggers...kinda like when you drive a standard shift truck for a few days, then get into your wife's car with the shifter on the column and vie versa... you're reaching for a shifter that isn't there...or an ign key slot that is in a different place.

And of course, you can dig a deeper hole with the ones Simme showed you above.
 
I think I have 4 sets of the old normal ones. And I have an auger for the tractor. All petty much useless here. When I rebuilt the corral I dug the hole with a mini excavator. I found rocks which wouldn't fit in a 20 inch bucket,
 
I have two kinds, because I never know what kind of soil I'll be digging in. I have the all steel ones, with the blades that are nearly flat, for tight ground, and the wooden handle ones with the curved blades for sand.

Lowes has an ok pair, for the biggest part the cutting head is good, it's the handles you have to look out for since most help if you can find any, don't know how to use them and break a lot of handles
