possible aborted calf?

I got this dairy cow that started to expell a placenta last night. This morning it was expelled but no calf. I know she is no way near being to full term with a calf/pregnancy, so I'm wondering maybe the calf was just real fetus like, and it was expelled but too small to tell? Or could it still be inside, or is it something totally different that I do not know about?

How big was the placenta? normal (full term) sized? How far along was the cow supposed to be?
 
The placenta was not full size.

I'm gonna watch her for the tail in air, and pushing signs. Although this morning she had neither signs, was acting pretty normal. This is a dilemma, for I am not sure how far along she was.

My neighbor said if it was a abort, there should be a sign of a calf, even if it was super small. I have had only one cow abort since I started farming, and it was a small calf, but did look like a calf, but no hair, etc... It is a concern, may just have to call the Vet tomorrow and see what they think, calf inside, dead, etc..

You could give her Lutalyse or oxytocin... chances are it was a small calf and you just missed seeing it (even a 6 month fetus is only a bit bigger than a cat), but if it's still inside the drugs should make her expel it within 12 hours.

This is not "chiseled in stone" but a pretty good rule of thumb to assist in determining the size of a calf in a pregnant cow. If you know that the cow is "for instance" 4 months bred....square the number of months months ( 4x4 = 16 and divide by 2).. the unborn calf will be approximately 8 inches long. 6 month calf 6x6=36/2 =18 inch calf.
